ROBERT BROWN Obituary

Iuka - Robert L. “Bob” Brown. Iuka lost one of its most respected citizens, Robert Lee “Bob” Brown, Jr., on Monday, July 4, 2011. Born August 2, 1928 and reared in the small Delta town of Sledge, Mississippi, Mr. Brown graduated from Mississippi State University in 1949 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He met and married Bettye Ruth Jourdan of Iuka in 1951. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. The couple subsequently moved to the hills of Tishomingo County where Mr. Brown established Brown Insurance Agency in Iuka thus beginning a long career as a businessman. He served on the Board of Directors of Iuka Guaranty Bank and was a partner in the J. C. Jourdan Lumber Company. Mr. Brown was an active member of Iuka United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. Other civic endeavors include Iuka Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow and Friends of the Iuka Library. Philanthropy was an important part of Bob’s life, evidenced in his support of many local causes, such as Iuka Heritage, Inc., the organization that successfully raised funds to purchase and maintain “The Little White (Episcopal) Church,” Angel Tree, and Boys and Girls Club of Iuka. In years past Bob enjoyed competitive skeet shooting, dove hunting, and playing golf, but his greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren play and grow. A favorite part of his daily routine was attending the 9:35 a.m. Coffee Club. Mr. Brown was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee (Connie Sullivan) Brown of Sledge, Mississippi and a beloved daughter, Beth. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bettye Jourdan Brown; a son, Robert Lee “Bob-O” Brown, III and wife Debbie of Iuka; a daughter, Barbara Jim Brown Turner and husband Bill of Oxford, Mississippi; five grandchildren, Robert Brown of Sarasota, Florida; Clinton Brown and wife Deidre of Starkville, Mississippi; Brown Turner, Van Turner and Tal Turner of Oxford, Mississippi; and one great-granddaughter, Darby Brown of Starkville, Mississippi. Pallbearers are L. O. Bishop, Clinton Brown, Robert Brown, Ben Gaines, Tony Gaines, David Jourdan, D. O. Jourdan, III and Gene Jourdan. Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Al Flannery, Calvin Seay and James Belue, as well as members of the 9:35 AM Coffee Club and Iuka Rotary Club. Cutshall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements where visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011. Funeral services will be held at Iuka United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2011, with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. Reverend Jon Kaufman will officiate at the service. The family requests that memorials be made to Iuka United Methodist Church, 101 E. Eastport St., Iuka, MS 38852 or Iuka Heritage, Inc., P.O. Box 165, Iuka, MS 38852 Cutshall Funeral Home (662)423-5222
