Craig ROCKWELL Obituary

Craig Richard Rockwell 1/30/1948 ~ 1/9/2011 Resident of Salem, OR Craig Richard Rockwell passed away January 9, 2011 of a serious cardiac event at the age of 62. Craig was born in Oakland, California on January 30, 1948 to Richard and Thelma Rockwell. Craig graduated from Acalanes High School, Lafayette, California in 1966. He attended Chico State College from 1966 to 1968, then the University of California at Berkley, where he graduated in 1970. He moved to Salem, Oregon to attend law school at Willamette University College of Law. During the summers he was a smoke jumper at the North Cascades Smokejumper Base in Winthrop, Washington. He graduated from law school in 1973 and began practicing law in Salem. Craig married Nancy Hartley in 1971. Craig and Nancy had two children, Spencer and Holly. Craig loved work of all kinds. Known for his hat, and in the summer a carnation in his lapel, Craig spent more than 30 years as a member of the legal community in Salem. When he wasn't working as a lawyer, he found other work to do, including remodeling houses, woodworking, or working in his yard pruning his fruit trees. The only thing that rivaled his love of actual work was riding his bike. Craig was a participant in nearly 25 Cycle Oregon events and countless other cycling adventures. Craig is survived by his parents Richard and Thelma Rockwell of Lafayette, California; his sister Linda Rockwell of Evergreen, Colorado; his brother Ray Rockwell (Mary Anne) of Pleasant Hill, California; his wife of more than 35 years, Nancy Rockwell of Salem, Oregon; his son Spencer Rockwell (Amy) of Salem, Oregon; his daughter Holly Rockwell (Richey) of Eugene, Oregon, and his nephews Evan Williams and Luke and Zach Rockwell. Craig was a unique, loving, and giving person who touched and changed the lives of all he came into contact with. The frequency and confidence with which he delivered his opinions on far-reaching topics will be missed every day. There will be a viewing at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection at 399 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill, California on Friday January 14, 2011 from 4-7pm. Services will be held on Saturday January 15, 2011 at 10:30 at the same location, with burial services and reception to follow. On January 30, 2011 there will be a birthday celebration of Craig's life at 3:30 at the Mission Mill Dye House in Salem. In Craig's work with children and families he was a great admirer of the work done at Her Place, a recovery facility for women and children. As such, donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Her Place, Attn: Terry Morgan, 2035 Davcor Street NE, Salem, OR 97302.

Craig and I always bantered about "proper" attorney attire. His claim was that one should always wear a white dress shirt. When he wore his plaid suit, I told him he looked good in pajamas. His humor and candor will be missed in our profession. R.I.P.

Craig was a breath of fresh air. He loved to create a scene and to make noise. He was outspoken and very real and honest. And those of us that worked with him at Child Welfare appreciated his honesty and the respect we shared. He was a real advocate for his clients and was able to tell them the truth about their situation when needed. We will miss him tremendously.

I worked in the Salem office as Craig. He was always a great help in resolving computer related issues and probably could have had a separate career in the computer field. He had a way about him of wanting to keep things organized and disliked wasting paper. He was a stickler for recycling office materials, and a few times Craig admonished me for not recylcing banana peels. Craig, if you are watching now, I continue to recycle even the used coffee granules.

I remember engaging Craig in several political-economic debates in the office. He was well read and kept current on many current event topics. He argued logically for his views, and I recalled that before I started a debate I needed to get my facts in order.

Craig was a great advocate for his clients. However, I recalled him trying to ingest common sense into his clients when they were acting inappropriately.

Craig will be immensely missed by everyone. He was a unique person, who was respected by those who knew him. It is still rather hard to believe he has passed. He seemed like a perfect example of someone who exercised frequently, and ate healthy.

I'm going to greatly miss my friend, neighbor and professional colleague of three decades. No punches pulled,he offered unvarnished opinions over the grape trellis he planted between our yards.Often with eye atwinkle,he'd say something outrageous just to get a reaction. We shared his homebrew beer in the 80's,the joys and travails of parenthood thru the 90's and the fruits of his labors from orchard and vinyard over the last decade. He'd be glad to loan an obscure tool or lend a hand when needed. There was sawdust in the basement of his first home in NE Salem and later spilling out of the woodshop in the garage, and often an unfinished project Volvo or something to attend to.His dogs Tobie and Sophie were his pals and became our good friends too.Craig mellowed over the last few years and treasured the times he spent time helping his son Spencer with home construction projects. Craig was as comfortable in his Cartharts as his business suit and was a character we will never forget. God speed,I'll miss you.
