Patrick Chaplin Obituary

Patrick "Pops" Chaplin
July 6, 1930 - June 9, 2014
Patrick Joseph Chaplin, 83, passed away at his home in Manhattan Beach on June 9, 2014. Pat was born on July 6, 1930 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to a father, William Chaplin, who left this world too soon, and a mother, Luetta Chaplin, who was the rock on which he built his whole life, a truly extraordinary woman. He chopped buffalo grass for the Marines in Guam during WWII, and as soon as he could he headed west for CA. Pat was a union man who started his career as a business agent for the UE, had a cup of coffee with ILWU, and finally made his home with the Teamsters Local 911. He walked the picket lines, thought profits were unpaid wages, and would use cockroaches as leverage in negotiations. He was a great negotiator. On June 10, 1950 he negotiated his best deal (minus cockroaches), and married Shirley Allen (6/15/28-10/28/08), the woman he loved, argued with, and took care of for 58 years. Pat is survived by daughters, Cathy and Linda; sons, Pat and Tim; grandchildren, TJ, Hayley, Rusty, Tyler, and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Julia and Cato; son-in-laws, Ruben and Mike; daughter-in-laws, Gina and Tracy; Brother Bill; nephews, Ken, Steve, Pete, Paul, Phil and Bill; niece Helen and TOO MANY PEOPLE TO LIST that loved and were loved by him. The Memorial Mass will be held at American Martyrs Church on Friday June 20, 2014 at 10:00am, and will be buried at Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Midnight Mission, 601 South San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014, or a charity of your choice. Mr. Chaplin...I just found this.I enjoyed the time I spent with you. Paying rent was always fun because I knew I could catch you in the garage and share a bud or two. You and Mrs. Chaplin were always very kind to me. Until we meet again my friend....GOD BLESS YOU AND MRS CHAPLIN.

Very sorry to hear of Pat's death. He helped us tremendously during a union organizing campaign in 1975 at Infomag, a Santa Barbara electronics plant. We had big dreams of organizing the entire Santa Barbara Valley electronics industry back then. What I remember best is Pat's nightly Old Milwaukee beer, and allowing us “youngsters” to determine the plant organizing strategy as we saw best, with his advice and experience as a guide. He never controlled. I do remember him saying “keep your eye on the ball” when management tried to confuse the issues during the campaign. We lost the election in a close vote, had it overturned by the NLRB due to management unfair labor practices, and then that decision was somehow later reversed. So we ended up losing. At our request, Pat brought Jim Matles to the plant to give a gate talk. Jim was verbally harassed by company management and later that night he suffered a heart attack and died. What a tragic loss. For me, this union organizing campaign in 1975 was one of my life's great learning experiences that I will never forget.
