Katherine Rush Obituary

Katherine "Kay" Dorothy Rush of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of California, died on Friday, November 5, 2010 after a valiant battle with lung cancer which spread rapidly through her body. Kay was born on January 20, 1937. She was a strong, caring and amazing woman who devoted much of her life to helping other people through their individual struggles with alcoholism. Her kindness and devotion to helping others was evident to everyone who knew her. Kay will be deeply missed by large numbers of people from California to New York City as well as England. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gerard T. Rush of Sioux Falls, SD; eight children and their spouses: Maureen (Jeffrey) Bland, Sioux Falls, SD; Laurene (William) Gill, Madison, CT; Susan Rush, Phoenix, AZ; Gerard T. (Lisa) Rush, Jr. Dell Rapids, SD; Lawrence "Duke" Rush, Phoenix, AZ; John (Eileen) Rush of Phoenix, AZ; Steven (Amanda) Rush, Southampton, England; and Christen (Lee) Shackleford of Sioux Falls, SD; 17 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. In addition to helping others, Kay loved to travel and read and had a knack for passing along her passions to her friends and family. She was a beautiful woman, inside and out. Kay's philosophy was: help family first and then help others of all races, creeds, and nationalities as circumstances required. A memorial will be planned in Kay's honor at a later date in California. A memorial mass will be celebrated in Sioux Falls, SD at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at St. Michael Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the House of Hope in care of 3113 S. Fernwood Ave., Sioux Falls, SD, 57110. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits. I missed Kay at the annual retreat at the Mary & Joseph Retreat Center last weekend. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. She inspired me as a mother, wife, and woman in the program. I remember going to the Fr. Terry retreat for the first time in 1994 and being greeted by Kay. We had known each other some years before through a work situation. She immediately made me feel welcome to the Center and to a new way of living. She loved her family and her friends. She will be missed by us all. God bless.

Kay's children provided so much support to Kay and Jerry this summer: bringing in food, taking Kay to her many doctor visits, keeping them company. When I told a couple of the children how inspiring it was to know of that support of their folks, the response was that they were providing the support that Kay would have given to them. The family was truly impressive at the funeral. I was honored to be there to witness that.

God's peace to all of you. May His strength, which was so evident in Kay, continue to bless and keep you. Gerry and family, you have my deepest sympathies. God bless you all as you honor a woman who truly had a wonderful impact on so many.
