I remember playing with Brett as kids. It was in Lexington, We lived just a few doors up the road. We played with our Star Wars toys, which was around the late 70's! I'm still living in Lexington, but every time I go by that house, I recall memories of Brett, and Bob, Suzanne. I happned to be watching Star Wars with my daughter, and thought of Brett, so I googled his name, and was shocked to see this! I'm so sorry I didn't know! My condolences and prayers for everyone in the family!

Il miglio fabbro ...

I knew Brett from his time in Boston: we first connected at Park Street and then quickly discovered we both went to BU. From there we found our mutual love of English and poetry. He was a tremendous blessing of friendship for that season of my life: a real kindred soul, witty, goofy, and sharp in equal measure. Anise and family, Kelli and I send you our love and our prayers. May God give you a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Flashback to Blue Hole, the Cabin circa mid 1990s - a gathering of family and friends. We five settle into the evening on the front porch, post-dinner, post-card game, the ubiquitous white noise comfort of the 'crick' behind us; that source of serenity, that muse of the Laurel Mountains. I ask Brett to read us some poetry - he cheerfully obliges settled in his chair with soft voice and easy cadence that brings complement to the water rushing and crickets chirping. And to my novice ear I heard not dense, obtuse erudition, but accessible and engaging language into which I was instantly drawn and immediately moved. And Suzanne, dear Friend, my memory of your wonderful son will always be of that western Pennsylvania summer night, Brett sharing his craft at the cabin on Fall Run Road - and it was heaven on earth.

Brett, you were always someone I looked up to in high school. I have many, many happy memories of hanging out with you, riding around, riding your halfpipe, skating+riding down at the lake of the ozarks, etc. I am truly sorry we lost touch after high school. But you didn't exit my thoughts. Whenever I'd see someone on a bmx bike, I'd think of you. Even my kids know your name. Know that you positively influenced many people and had a life-long affect on them. You will be missed.

We met Brett at Chicago Shakespeare Theater - he quickly became our favorite "Prologue" speaker. We began to plan our theater dates for the bonus of learning from Brett. A kind and generous scholar, enthused about his topic and eager to share with us. With just a few encounters over the years, he made an impression. Our love and prayers go out to his family.

Brett is very much alive in my memory, more than 20 years after I taught him in a single course at MU, and so he will remain. He had a brilliant mind, a wide-ranging curiosity, and the sort of infectious enthusiasm that lit up the room. I can only imagine what a wonderful teacher and father he must've been. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with his family, colleagues, and students.

I am so very saddened and I simply want to express my sorrow for your loss. And the loss to all that every met Brett. I only knew him for a mere moment through friends, (he came to dinner with us for Mike Holley's 40th) but he was so full of life, so giving and undoubtably an amazing man. Hugs to you all. Psalm 18:28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

I wish to express my profound sorrow at Brett's passing. I met Brett a few years ago in Italy with Gordon College colleagues, and was immediately animated by Brett's largesse and sincere interest in me and my work. We communicated only briefly, by email, after that. But every exchange carried the same enthusiastic spirit of authentic interest and good will. In this time of sadness I have derived solace from others' tributes to him -- tributes of beloved friends and colleagues. I however, knew him only fleetingly and so do not feel equipped to write a "tribute." Yet, in his loss, I sense that though our time was fleeting, there was also profundity there. This short note of remembrance is not a tribute borne out of years of friendship since that we did not share. But Brett enlivened a warm corner of my (often) struggling heart and it is my prayer that, amid all other crowns he will surely wear, there might be an added one for the light he brought to me. I send my deepest condolences to all who loved him.

Brett was such a delight in the time that I knew him while he was a student at Mizzou and dating Anise. He was a bright, soaring soul who knew Jesus deeply and loved Him wholly. I have such sweet memories of my times with him. I'm glad we've got more time ahead of us together with Jesus where we'll hear the Father say, "Behold I am making all things new!" After his struggle, he's ready for the new....

I am deeply saddened about Brett's passing. He was such an incredible person who definitely made the world a much better place by his being in it. He was a great friend to me and will always hold a special place in my heart, including his mom and grandma. I still think of them every time I see Gone With The Wind. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, and mother. I can't even imagine what you're going through right now. Peace and love, Tonya
