C.B. Courtney Obituary
Dr. Courtney, a devoted and conscientious surgeon, helped many patients in his community. He was a former President of Riverside Regional Medical Center general staff and Vice President of the Riverside surgical staff, a former President of the Newport News Medical Society and former President of the James River Country Club. During his professional career, he was an active member of both the American Medical and Southern Medical Associations, the Humera Surgical Society, the American College of Surgeons, a delegate for the State Medical Society and diplomate from the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Courtney was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Cornelius Byrd Courtney, Genevieve Dellinger Courtney Buckles and his sister, Genevieve Courtney Ames. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Faye, daughter, Christy Hood (David), two grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew.
He was laid to rest at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News. No memorial per his wishes.
Expressions of sympathy maybe be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements were provided by Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

I am sorry that this is so late. I worked with Dr. Courtney back in the 1970's and early 1980's in the operating room at then Riverside Hospital before moving to Florida and absolutely loved this man as a person and a surgeon. I am sure everyone that knew him felt the same way. RIP

Faye, I just saw the obituary for your husband and am heartbroken. As a young pharmaceutical representative in the early `70´s, Byrd took me under his wing and was so kind to me.
He was an unbelievable surgeon, a friend to many, a good husband and father.

Mrs. C, Christy and family,
I was truly saddened to hear of Dr. Courtney’s passing. I have so many memories of the times our families spent together and times of playing golf with Dr. C and dad as well as fond memories of my friendship with Christy. Dr. Courtney was special. He was truly the most giving, thoughtful, sincere, generous and fun person I had ever met. Byrd operated on my stepfather who said it best "he lights up the room when he walks in". Thoughts and prayers to the family. He was one of us.

I owe so much to Dr. Courtney. He somehow managed to put me back together after a very severe accident that I really shouldnt have lived through. I'm so fortunate that you were there 42 years ago. God bless you Dr Courtney.
