Cheryl, Matthew, and Family;
We have such fond memories of Johnnny when he would come and pick Matt up when we had the daycare in our home. He was so patient watching Matthew as he would gather his blanket and perhaps a toy or two, a real "kodak moment." You guys have always been a special family to us. We will miss Johnny and we are praying that God's love will comfort you as you walk these moments. We love you guys so much and are sorry we were in Baltimore and could not be there.
We love you guys, and we remain only a phone call away. (804).955.6886
Praise HIM,

Mr. Brown was my fisrt grade teacher at Jonh Marshall in 87. He was one of my favorite teachers. I was so sad to hear his death. My sons also got to know him as principal Brown at MECC. Whenever I went to an event at the school he pointed me out as one of his former students. I will miss his warm smile and hello. I wish his family the best at this hard time.

I had the privilege of working with Johnnie last year at MECC. He was a great and compassionate man,always smiling and so full of life and energy. I have many pleasant memories, including the neighborhood tour that Johnnie conducted for all new teachers because he cared so much about the children. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, adults and children alike. Although I was unable to be with you all on Saturday, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heart is heavy with sorrow. Johnnie was and is one of the greatest men I've known. From the age of 6 to 17 I spent a great deal time at the Boys Club on Jefferson Ave. Johnnie was a role model for all the boys there. He was Smart, fair, funny, and you always felt he cared about you and your well being. I believe he is part of the reason I am the man I am today. He will be missed more than words can express. Godspeed Johnnie.

On August 7, 2010, the Huntington High School Class of 1968 members celebrated the milestone of turning 60 by holding a birthday party for all classmates. Among those present was the "gentle, quite, kind-hearted giant of a man" that so many have described in the pages of this guestbook. Johnnie made the rounds at that party with his wonderful smile, and sincere expressions of being glad to see everyone. We talked awhile about what had been, what was, and what could or would be. Little did we know then that his time for departure was so near, but we are so thankful to God for giving us the opportunity to see him at his finest that day, and to unknowingly say goodbye to our classmate. He was all of those wonderful adjectives people have used to describe him. He left this world a much better place--in educating our youth, in giving back to the community, in the love he gave to so many. Johnnie's family is blessed with great memories, and thoughts and prayers from those who loved him for the good man that he was. He is going to be dearly missed at our class functions, as he will everywhere that he has ever been, because wherever he went, he left a mark of excellence, love, and appreciation. Thank you God for allowing us to have Johnnie as a part of our lives, even though it was just for a little while. Gone too soon from earth, but not too soon for Heaven.

To the entire Brown family;
The class of HHS "68" is very sadden of the sudden passing of our classmate Johnnie. At this time we are blessed to hold fond memories of our 60th birthday celebration on August 10th 2010. Johnnie must have had the message from God that this was going to be his last fellowship with his high school classmates. You should have experienced how Johnnie spent the night taking the time and effort to personally greet each of us classmates and share is conversation. Many later remarked how they didn't know this side of Johnnie. He had attended our reunions and events faithly, supporting the occasions but never engaging in contact with everyone on a personal level. Johnnie want from table to table to greet everyone and it seemed as if he did not want to leave anyone out. Now we the classmates understand, God had given Johnnie the courage to bid us farewell,(yes he took the time in his own way to say goodby to each of us). We thank God for this opportunity to have these memories in pictures as well as in our hearts. God had taken back a special man, a gentle and caring person to heaven above. To the family we know that God is able to carry you through and He will Keep you in blessed peace.

Dear Cheryl,Matthew, and the Brown Family,
Johnnie and I graduated from Christopher Newport together and later I had the great pleasure of working with him at Warwick Early Childhood Center. He possessed such passion for children and had great respect for his staff at WECC and his other schools. I remember his passion for his calling at a time when teachers of young children were traditionally held by women. He related so well with children, staff, and parents. It was an honor to know him, and he shall never be forgotten.
Matthew, you were such a shining star in your Dad's eyes, and Cheryl, you were the love of his life. It was such an honor to see Matthew in First Step and Cheryl, I so appreciated your help as my volunteer during Matthew's year in FS at Carver Early Childhood Center.
May God bless and keep Johnnie's family in these days ahead.
Please call upon me at anytime that you may want to talk or if you need anything.
God bless Johnnie and all his family at this most difficult time.

It seems like yesterday, even though it has been many years now, when I worked under Johnnie Brown at Palmer Elementary School. I will always remember Johnnie's kind words and deeds that he so willingly gave. To Mrs. Brown and the entire Brown family, may you find peace in the midst of your trials and tribulations. Know that Johnnie is resting in the bossom of our Lord and Savior. He is now your Guardian Angel watching over you. When times seem rough and your load seems so heavy, whisper a silent prayer and you will surely find peace. Mrs. Brown, you and your family definately have my prayers and keep your hand in God's loving hands and he will lead you and guide you through this difficult time.

I was fortunate to know Johnnie Brown because my wife worked with him at two schools. Over the years I heard many stories of his kindness and love for the children. As a principal he looked very good in a suit, but he was equally comfortable dressed as Wee Willie Winkie. I will miss his natural smile and friendly handshake. His life was too short, but well lived!

I send my deepest sympathy to the Brown family. I remember the day he hired me and then he found out I hadn't gone through the right channels but he said it would be fine and he still wanted me to work at his school. I can also still picture him running down the hall on Wee Willie Winkie Day. I think he had more fun then the kids. He always knew how to brighten up your day. You will truly be missed!

Dear Johnnie: You were a great big brother. Always quiet but strong at the same time. Thank you for always looking out for mama...you really were a mama's boy and she said so to the very end. You introduced me to WGH radio in the mid 60s when everyone else was listening to WRAP. I still love that music today. I heard "RESPECT" for the first time on the porch on 29th Street on a little portable record player you brought from working at the Boys' Club. Now Little Indy can have her Uncle Johnnie to keep her company. Love your sister, Tonya Brown-Gillard

Mr. Brown was one of the best principals I have known. I worked on the primary side of Magruder Elementary, but because I had students that came from early childhood, Mr. Brown would come in and check on them. One of my fondest memories is when I had my Fun and Fitness class on Wednesday's club day. We were exercising to Michael Jackson's Thriller and Mr. Brown came in spontaneously and started dancing to Thriller. The kids and I really enjoyed this moment and didn't realize what a great dancer he was. He knew all of the Thriller moves. Mr. Brown we loved that moment and we will miss you, but knowing God has a better plan. Love Mrs. Satchell and room #005.
