Louis MONROE Obituary

HAMPTON - Dr. Louis Monroe, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 9, 2010.
Dr. Monroe was born on Aug. 26, 1922, and served his country proudly. He fought in Patton's Army in Europe during World War II and served as an Air Force Intelligence officer during the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. He was especially proud of earning his Master Parachutist Wings and jumping with the Philippine Special Forces. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1970, he went on to earn his Doctorate in Education at William and Mary and then served as the Assistant to the President of Tidewater Community College, retiring at the age of 70.
Louis married the love of his life, Frances Joy Monroe, prior to his deployment to Europe in 1942, and they remained devoted husband and wife, as well as best friends, until her passing in November of 2009. He was an active member of West Hampton Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon as well as chairman of the deacons, and chairman of the personnel committee.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Johnye Monroe (his wife, Jo Ann); son, Randy Monroe; granddaughter, Elizabeth Monroe Hill, whom he raised as a daughter (her husband, Greg); beloved grandchildren, Michael Monroe (his wife, Bobbie Jo), Laura Monroe, Robert Monroe, and April Monroe; and his three great-grandchildren, Monroe Hill, Hannah Monroe, and Marshal Hill.
His family is eternally grateful for his life which will be celebrated at a visitation from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 11, at West Hampton Baptist Church, followed immediately by a memorial service at the same location. Dr. Monroe and his wife, Joy will be laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.

Sending my love to all those close to Louis. I've heard so many positive things about him. He will always hold a special place in my heart, even though I wasn't fortunate enough to meet him. He was a remarkable person. I will keep Louis and family in my prayers.

Dear Liza and family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time of loss. Take comfort that Dr. Monroe is now reunited with the love of his life Joy and that his suffereing has ended. Liza, you will miss them both forever but the memories that you have and the way that they lived their lives will help to bring you peace and comfort. I can't think of any two kinder next door neighbors to have....

Dear Monroe Family:
Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to you, in your time of loss. Mr. Monroe was our first Deacon when we joined West Hampton 16 years ago. It was my privilege to take the teen girls to sing Christmas carols at his home back in Dec. and to see the joy on his face again. I pray that God will give you and your family comfort at this time. My deepest sympathy goes out to all the family in the loss of Dr. Monroe and in the loss of Mrs. Monroe. I know from experience how hard it is to lose both parents close together. Know you are in the thoughts and prayers of others. May God give you comfort during this time and in the days ahead. Their passing is such a great loss to our church.
