I just heard about the Mr. Pritchett's passing from my brother Tim Litz. As soon as he mentioned Albert I remebered the kind and patient gentleman who picked us up for HRA, without judgemental looks when we were late. Our warm sympathy to his family. It was an honor to know a member of the Black Panthers and thank him for his amazing time in the service. Affectionately, Jeannie Litz '65

Albert Fitchett was a gentleman, and showed the HRA community what it is to walk out one's faith day by day. Albert lived his faith by investing his life into those around him, encouraging them and building them up. He was a tremendous blessing to me and all my fellow students. I pray the Lord's comfort for his family at their loss. —Christopher Smith, Class of 1981

I first met Mr. Fitchett in 1961 as a new 9th grader. Later, Roger Dick '65 and I worked under his direction doing landscaping work for the school in the summer of 1964. When we make a mistake, he was patient; he also had a terrific sense of humor.
We asked about his ability to fix just about anything including the '46 Ford & early 50's Chevy and REO buses. He told us a few stories from his Army experiences but I had no idea how much of a contribution he had made.
His patient and responsible behavior was a model for all of us; I'm glad I had the chance to know him.
All the best to his family as they process his loss. Jim Naeseth '65

We are saddened by the loss of Mr. Fitchett. He was a good friend to our family. My father enjoyed their 18 years together at HRA and regretted not being able to attend the funeral due to poor health. We send our sincerest regrets to the family. - Col. David Dick, Roger (‘65) and Denise Dick

I first met Albert the day the bright yellow bus pulled up to pick me up on my first day at HRA in 1967. I got to know Albert well in my 5 years at Hampton Roads and I look back on his quiet wisdom and unassuming presence in every aspect of my HRA experience with great fondness. I have thought of Albert frequently in the intervening years, and I will miss him. The Fitchett family has my heartfelt sympathy. The sun will shine a little dimmer with his passing.

I was a graduate of Hampton Roads Academy in 1982 and had the opportunity to be in his presence for 6 years. He made an impression on me with his quiet strength and patience. I am writing this note on the day Barack Obama has been elected President, Albert in is own way helped make this a reality in our lifetimes. My condolences go to his family.

As one of the original 60 students who began HRA , I have many fond memories of Albert. He was friendly and always had a smile for me . I still remember the day he let me drive the lawn tractor during study hall; it was the highlight of my day! As a retired teacher of 30 years, I can recognize and admire his patience with, and love for, young people. He will truly be missed. Carol Rogallo Sparks

Due to the lack of a school bus that ran to Yorktown at the time, I spent several hours at HRA every day until my parents got off from work and picked me up. Some people were around after school, but Albert was usually the only other person there the entire time that I was. His kindness and dignity are what I remember most. He helped me adjust when I came to a new school and didn't know anyone or fit in.

My sympathies to his family.

As one of the "original" HRA students in 1959 and a 1964 graduate, I have many good memories of my years there. One of my fondest memories is of Mr. Fitchett driving the bus and being followed around the grounds by Col. Dick's little dog Monty, who we all loved.

Mr. Fitchett was always a gentleman, had a kind smile and a gentle manner. When I saw his picture in the paper, it brought a rush of warm thoughts back to me of good times from many years ago.

I wish your family peace of mind and heart and I will always have a special place in my memory of a fine man.

I will always remember Albert with fond memories, not the least of which is the way he looked after us all during the hundreds of football and soccer games he drove us to and from over the years. Somehow having Albert's presence, smiling from the driver's seat, waiting to take us home, made the losses easier, and the victories sweeter.
With age comes the appreciation of how we are all influenced and shaped by the people we have been blessed to walk this earth with.... and I will always consider myself fortunate to have had Albert's presence, and influence in my life. The world would be a better place if everyone had the blessing that we had in him...

So it's not too hard to envision Albert, now from above, smile on his face, once again, watching after us, and patiently holding the bus until the rest of us get there...

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Fitchett's passing. He was a wonderful person and was well respected by all the students at HRA. I had the pleasure of being a part of the class of 1981 that dedicated our yearbook in his honor. I would like to share our 1981 dedication with you...
Albert Fichett
Although you have never stood in front of a classroom
You have taught us much about humanity-
In you, we have seen sensitivity, a sense of humor, dependability, loyalty.
From you, we have received respect, friendship, the warmth of a smile,
To you, we dedicate this 1980-81 H.R. A. LOG.

God speed to you Mr. Fitchett as you watch over each of us from a more beautiful place.

Albert was a wonderful role model for all of us at HRA. He did everything with grace, dignity and good cheer and made you feel that he truly cared for each and every student at the school. Mrs. Fitchett was also a lovely person and my thoughts go out to her and the rest of the family.

November 3, 2008

Condolences to Mrs. Fitchett, Albert Fitchett Jr., and all family members.

My earliest memories of Albert were of him coming around to pick me up for school in an ex navy '57 Ford that HRA had long before the "Mini Bus" days. Three of us were treated to his friendship and his pleasant way of getting on with his tasks. I was surprised to hear that Albert was a Tank man but it only shows how he was more about those around him than himself. He made a special effort to congratulated me on scoring a winning goal in soccer. Albert knew his students and was always a joy to be around. He will be missed and was held in high regard by the HRA family.

My condolences to Mrs. Fitchett, Albert Fitchett Jr., and all family members.

I started at HRA as a nervous kid, and my memory of Albert Fitchett was of a rock, a reliable man upon whom everyone depended and who undertook some of the least pleasant tasks in the school willingly, cheerfully, and with dignity. We were fortunate to be able to learn by his example. Today's world needs more people like Albert Fitchett.

Albert had a great sense of humor and kindness, that you did not have to look hard to find. He could fix anything. We all would have benefited, in many respects, from a mandatory class taught by him. My thoughts go out to all of Albert Fitchett's family and friends.

During my days at HRA, I recognized Albert's dignity and thoughtfulness, but in my youth took for granted the great professionalism he brought to his work. In his quiet way, he contributed far more than we'll ever know to Hampton Roads' excellence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fitchett family.

I was shocked to receive word of Albert's passing in an email yesterday. I only knew Albert for two years before graduating in 1964. He was a class act who taught all HRA students valuable life lessons. As a bus driver I remember him trying to keep those old buses running. I didn't have a clue about his military service because he never mentioned it. What a patriot! My condolences to his wife and family. Having just lost my dad this past January, also at 92, I can understand the hole it leaves in your heart. The consolation, however, lies in remembering the wonderful life they had and the contributions to their family.

What an enduring and kind gentleman. The campus of HRA was never quite the same after Albert's retirement. With all the ups and downs that high school and adolescence brings, Albert was, and continues to be, a constant source and lasting example of what it means to be kind. He made HRA a better school by quietly teaching us about this life lesson. His family should know and celebrate the fact that some of the best, most important and lasting lessons taught at HRA, were taught by Albert. He earned his wings years ago.

Albert was always special to those of us at HRA and I fondly remember him as the "jack of all trades" doing whatever it took to keep the school together and running. When he wasn't fixing something or cutting and lining the fields he was driving the bus...always havihng a kind word to say and a smile on his face.

I am saddened by the news of his death although he lived a long life. Unfortunately I am travelling to Ohio this morning (Monday, November 3) and will not be able to attend his funeral. Please know that I send his family and friends my best wishes and heartfelt condolences.

Mr. Fitchett was always a great friend to me, helping out with building sets for the theatre, and even driving me to pick up materials in his old pickup truck. He taught me a great deal about respecting folks and finding dignity in one-on-one interactions with all of those around us. To this day, I always remember Mr. Fitchett and make sure to keep track of how all of my co-workers are doing. I will miss his mentorship, as I have for 26 years since my graduation.

I attended HRA between 1977 and 1981. I have fond memories of Albert and clearly remember how he ALWAYS had a kind word and smile for everyone - even the students that may have been a bit rowdy. Albert was a friendly, kind-hearted man that set a good example for all the people that he met! May his family find comfort in knowing how he brightened so many peoples' lives.

I was present as an HRA student at the ceremony held in honor of Mr. Fitchett's retirement. I remember that he was given a large color TV because his wife had told the administrators that that he would really appreciate that gift. Mr. Fitchett (as a Black student, I always called him Mr. Fitchett, as a means of respecting his age and dignity) was always one of the most kind and serene presences for me on the campus. I sorely missed him over the three years following his retirement, as I completed my studies. His was a presence that could neither be duplicated nor replaced. I send my most sincere condolences to the Fitchett family and all those who loved this exemplary gentleman.

Albert Fitchett was the bus driver and custodian when I attended Hampton Roads Academy in the 1960s, but, most importantly, he was my friend and mentor. He taught me a lot, beyond what was in textbooks or in classrooms. I never knew of his distinguished military service, but now that I do know, it is one more reason why I salute him for the fine gentleman he was.
