Alice McCarthy Obituary

HAMPTON - Alice M. McCarthy, 73, passed away Oct. 28, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Hainesport, N.J., Sept. 27, 1936, to Joseph and Alice Mitchell. After graduating from high school, she started working at Fort Dix, N.J., where she met the love of her life, Justin E. (Gene) McCarthy Jr. They married on Oct. 31, 1959, and spent 50 years together raising their family and keeping them in line.
Alice always had a song in her, and sang in her church choir while in high school, and for the last 20 years at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was an active volunteer in her children's schools and with other organizations at places where Gene's military career took them. Her most satisfying volunteer job was being the soccer coach when her daughters all played on the same team for St. Mary's Catholic School. After retiring from Hampton City Schools, she began traveling again with her husband and enjoyed trips to Italy, Hungary and Ireland with her good friends, Diane Cone and Claire Rose. She loved to keep her hands busy with crafts of all sorts, especially crocheting blankets to keep her family warm. She always made sure no one left the house hungry, and a party could never have too much food or wine. She never met anyone she couldn't talk to, and will be missed by her many friends at St. Joseph's Church and TOPS, and her swimming buddies.
Her parents and her sister, Doris Zimmer, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Gene; her four daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Dan Burke, Patty and Tim Glynn, Erin and Don Gray, and Maureen McCarthy; her seven grandchildren, Kelly Glynn, Patrick Glynn, Justin Burke, Daniel Burke, Colleen Burke, Donald Gray, and Mary Gray. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters and their families, Joe Mitchell, Stanley Mitchell, Billy Mitchell, John Mitchell, Monica Evans and MaryAnn Tyner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. with a Rosary service to begin at 6 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School, Hampton, Va. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Dear Gene and Girls,
How sad it was to hear about Alice's sickness and death. I remember you all so well from our years together at St. Mary's. And I know how she loved to travel. That beautiful and smiling face made you happy to just see her.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you travel down this sad and lonely path.

Alice was my cousin, and I loved her very much. I can't ever remember seeing her without a smile on her face. She loved her family, and was a wonderful wife and mother. She always was there for comfort when we needed her. Being in NJ and away from her made it hard to stay in touch, but she and Gene and sometimes the kids would stop and see us when traveling through. She would also stop at Ellis meats to get her favorite hotdogs when here. We also made it to VA. to attend two weddings. I will miss her dearly. I am so happy that within the last couple of months I did have a chance to speak with her. I love you guys. Take care of yourselves, and please stay in touch.

Dear Family,

It is with great sadness that I read the e-mail containing Aunt Alice's obituary. Dawn and my heart goes out to you all. We wish we could be there to be with the family but unfortunately we can't.

I have such found memories of Aunt Alice. The things that I remember are her laugh, and the look in her eye when she was happy they were all so contagious.

I always enjoyed being around her and talking with her. She and my dad would always end up talking about their mom and dad, and the stories they had growing up. I tape recorded one of those story telling moments and will go try and find that tape and listen to it again. Aunt Alice's perspective on the subject was always interesting to me, she always made it more interesting then it first seemed.

Dawn and I also remember how she always rooted for the Irish, we will be thinking about her every time we watch them. We will go to the Grotto at Notre Dame and light a candle in her name and say a prayer asking the good Lord above to welcome her into his kingdom.

We miss you all and wish we could be there.

Your Mom had the best laugh of all our Moms. And she was so happy and energetic and fun all the time. And Mrs. McCarthy never ratted me out to my mom when she caught me driving their old brown Honda wagon with Cathy during school hours. But I sure did get a fiery tounge lashing. My deepest condolences.

To my family,
I am sorry that I could not be there to celebrate Aunt Alice's life. Mommy and Daddy are there for me. One of my best memories of aunt Alice was one summer when I visted Kelly and I went to the pool and stayed all day long. Well Aunt Alice was none to happy with me. But Kelly and I had a blast. Aunt Alice sing "How Great Thou Art" for me with grandma. I love you and I miss you,
