Beverley McGHEE Obituary

CHESAPEAKE - Beverley Burke McGhee, 78, of Chesapeake, Va., died on Nov. 2, 2010.
A native of Norfolk, she graduated from Maury High School. She received her BA Degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond, and a M.Ed. from The College of William and Mary. She did later post-graduate work at the University of Virginia. She taught for many years at Rappahannock Community College in Gloucester County, Va., and later at Tidewater Community College.
She was married for 23 years to Edward Earl Dunklee, and they had three children, Edward Earl Dunklee Jr. and his wife, Kimberly, Anne Lynwood Dunklee Arnold and her husband, Charles, and Peter Burke Dunklee and his wife, Phaedra. In addition, she is survived by two granddaughters, Meredith Susan Arnold, Sara Peyton Dunklee and several beloved cousins.
She was later married for a few blissful years to Grady N. McGhee, who preceded her in death. They lived in Texas, Mississippi and Illinois, where they made cherished friendships.
She moved back to the Tidewater area after his death, where she fulfilled a lifetime dream of owning a bookstore. "A Likely Story!" in Norfolk gave her great delight, mingling with books and book-lovers.
Her main pleasures in life were her family and friends. After that, traveling, music, flowers, teaching, and reading gave her the most enjoyment.
At the request of Mrs. McGhee, she will be cremated. Also at her direction, there is to be no service and neither donations nor memorials. She did request that anyone wishing to remember her should just spend the money on something for themselves – perhaps a plant or book or recording. She is grateful that her family and friends were very good to her when she was alive and when it mattered. Online condolences may be expressed at www.nelsencares.com. Just imagine how many lives Mrs.McGhee inspired and improved throughout her many years of teaching! My son was virtually a non-reader in the second grade when she began to tutor him. At the end of the fifth grade, he was honored with being the #1 Accelerated Reader in his class. Her positive encouragement in repeatedly saying, "You CAN do hard things" continues to motivate him even now as a VT student.

For the past 15 years Mrs.McGhee taught me how to be a better mother, teacher, and friend. I will forever cherish our "field trips" and lunches.

Meridith and Sara, your grandmother bragged about you two girls endlessly! Continue to be the intelligent, lovely young ladies you are now. Honor her by always being compassionate towards those less fortunate than you, and through making wise choices in your future.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and close friends of Mrs. Mcghee. My sisters and I had the pleasure of cleaning for Mrs. Mcghee the last year or so. In doing so, we had the opportunity to get to know her on a personal level and grew to care about her. She was funny and smart and would delight in sharing stories of her family and her beloved cat, Abby. She loved her family and friends and we will miss her. Rest in peace, Mrs. Mcghee
