Dale Richards Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Dale L. Richards passed away on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, in Williamsburg, Va.
He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Feb. 17, 1945, to the late Kenneth Richards and Josephine Paolucci Richards.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Debra Richards. Dale is also survived by his son, Dale Lee Richards Jr.; and three daughters, Jodi Richards Ferrente, Lisa Richards and Irina Richards; as well as five grandchildren, Joseph and Michael Bell, Shana Ferrente, Matthew and Jack Richards; great-grandson, Joey Bell; and his brother, William Richards.
After graduating from high school in Westport, Conn., Dale served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam era. Dale moved to the Washington, D.C., area in the late seventies, where he started his career with IBM and married Debbie in 1980. Dale's love of his family, community and church was reflected in the joy he found in helping his family, friends and neighbors. Dale loved to play golf, umpire baseball, and never tired of his ministry of help to others.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at Williamsburg Community Chapel, 3899 John Tyler Hwy, Williamsburg. Interment will follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dale's honor to the American Lung Association at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20004. Online condolences may be registered at www.nelsencares.com. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Debbie, Lisa & Irina,

I will miss Dale very much with our family get togethers and our many conversations on the phone. Dale always knew what to say to make me feel good about myself, personally or about my finances, about anything really. I always admired how he knew so much about so many different things, such a very smart and loving man. I will miss all the e-mails he sent, I still have a few hundred some unopened. Dale loved life and everyone he came in contact with. I am so glad my children got to know him so well, Dale really touched their lives and they couldn't wait to be be with him, tickling them and playing around and acting like a kid himself!

We will deeply miss Dale, our prayers are with you now and forever.

I am so glad he found the lord, meeting his friends over this past weekend has made me want to have a relationship with Christ so many beautiful people.

I knew Dale for only a short time, yet he touched my life by the way he lived his. His relationship with Christ has inspired me to keep working at becoming a man with genuine faith and commitment. I will miss Dale.

Debbie,

Dale put himself out there like few others I know. I refer to the hours he gave as a home handyman/craftsman for little or no money to those who had little or no money. I refer to his embracing opportunities to do some good as a father at a stage in life when other men regard themselves as having paid their fatherhood dues. I refer to his fight for his relationship with Christ following the model set by St. Paul: trying to be Godly while acknowledging and battling his faults.

I remember him as a man who studied and spread God's Word, and I remember him as my friend. May God bless you and your family.

In Christ's love,
David Jones

I would like to send condolences to the family. I knew Dale because of Ace and thought he was a wonderful person. Very pleasant to be around and very helpful. He helped with repairs around my house and was both professional and enjoyable. I am glad I got to know him just a little.

My deepest condolences to Debbie and Dale's family. Dale and I shared many fun hours of golf together this Summer and I will really miss him. "Nice shot Al!" was his favorite expression when I missed a shot and I heard it often. I will never forget this wonderful man. Craig
