George Crawford Obituary

STATESVILLE, N.C. - George William Crawford, 103, of Statesville, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Crawford was born Oct. 21, 1906, and was the son of the late John Clifton and Mary Niblock Crawford of the Chambersburg (Bethany) Township of Iredell County. His early education was in Iredell County, graduating from Statesville High School (then D. Matt Thompson). He completed Davidson College with honors in 1929, earned his master's degree at UNC Chapel Hill and later his Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
In 1940, he was called into service during WWII and served as lieutenant colonel of infantry in the European theater as a member of the First United States Army Headquarters. He took part in Normandy, Central European and Rhineland Campaigns, being awarded six ribbons and three campaign stars.
On May 19, 1934, George married Frances Knox of Cornelius who died Aug. 21, 1991. They had no children but both chose to educate children. She taught first grade and he served as a professor of physics at N.C. State University, Davidson College and The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va. He retired from William and Mary and was named Professor Emeritus of Physics at that institution. He cherished the title of Professor.
In addition to enjoying teaching, he had many interests and hobbies. He was talented in wood working including marquetry and furniture making. Until he was nearly 100, he shared his knowledge of astronomy through articles and star charts published in the Statesville Record & Landmark.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Professor Crawford has served his church as a deacon, elder, and teacher and on many committees. Until recently, he rarely missed Sunday worship at Forest Park.
He is survived by a nephew, Robert C. Crawford; and by nieces, Agnes C. Mayes and Mary Frances C. Holland of Statesville, by Sara C. Wolfson of Iowa City and Betty Crawford of Smithfield, N.C. He is also survived by several great and great-great-nieces and nephews whom he adored.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Fred N. Crawford Sr., James A. Crawford and Thomas N. Crawford; and by a nephew, Fred N. Crawford Jr.
Funeral services will be held at Forest Park Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Scott Jefferies and the Rev. Tom Corbell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor prior to the service.

I remember dear Dr. Crawford well. When I first went to William & Mary as a young secretary in the Physics Department, I was only 21 years old. Dr. Crawford used to bring me roses from his rose garden, telling me the names of each one. Back then he wrote an article in the Virginia Gazette on Astronomy each week, telling people what they would be able to view in the night sky. I typed all those articles (back before computers), learning much myself in the process. He was a wonderful, wonderful person, continuing to stay active and involved long after he retired. You all, who are his nieces and nephews and cousins, etc. have certainly been blessed to have him as part of your family. I am 62 years old and a grandmother now, but my life has certainly been enriched for having known Dr. Crawford and having him as a mentor and friend.

Mr. Crawford was a great man with a lot to offer. He was very eager to help anyone that was wanting to learn. He wanted to teach anyone who wanted to learn. We had a lot of fun times together riding around and looking at the different houses in the country club. He would give his opinion on which ones he like and disliked. We had fun. It was an adventure every time we went out for a joy ride. He loved riding in his 55 chevy as well. He always said, "It rides better than the Buick." He will be missed greatly for his wonderful words of wisdom and his smiles and laughters that he shared with everyone. May you rest in peace Professor George Crawford.

I hope cousin George is having a wonderful, long-awaited homecoming, and enjoying all the southern fried chicken he can eat in the company of his dear Frances.

I will miss seeing him at the Crawford reunions.

Sunday night Dr.G gave me a final memory....He asked me to join him in prayer, it was so beautiful and touching to hear him pray aloud.....and now he is gone.....I will miss Dr.G so very much. Such an amazing soul. Although, I only knew him a short time, I will remember him FOREVER! I feel blessed to have had him and his family and all the wonderful ladies, who I worked with take care of him, in my life. Rest in peace Dr. G, I will see you again someday.....
