The family would like to thank the exceptional medical team whose tireless efforts graced the family with an extra decade to be with their beloved sister, mother, aunt, and Nana.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with a reception to follow at the Parish Hall. An engraved leaf in Joan's honor will be added to the Tree of Remembrance.

Mike, Nancy and I were very saddened to hear of the passing of your mother. All my memories of her are pleasant and I particularly remember the "patience and kindness" she displayed toward us as teenagers.

Our prayers are with you and your family Mike. I hope our paths cross again soon.

Dear Nica and all of Fairbanks and Youngblood family members,

Just like Nica, Joan was a unique and gifted individual. She was a gracious hostess as she welcomed others into her home. My most significant memory of Joan was when I roomed with Nica and Olivia while my husband served in VietNam. She was so kind to me when Nica and I would drop in for visits. She welcomed me into her home and at her table. She included me at family get-togethers at Virginia Beach as if she had known me always. Her kind heart was a wonderful gift. Like my oldest sister, she too was the "beauty" of the family. Her faith, "grace under fire" and perseverance enabled her to give her loved ones extra years. I know that she's already sorely missed. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers in the difficult days ahead. God bless each of you!

Love and Friendship,
Brenda Barnette

Dear, dear Nica! My heart goes out to you, to Mike and Lois, to all your nieces and nephews and the whole wonderful lot of you.

Joan sounds like a truly exceptional woman, and I know you will miss her terribly. Siblings share that special bond -- beyond friendship (though friendship is there), beyond family (because you get to bond as equals).

Hold your memories close like jewels.

Mike, Lois, Nica and the Fairbanks family, I am sadden and sorry for the loss of Joan. I remember Joan visiting Nica and going to the Virginia Museum of fine Arts for the Egyptian Exhibit which she enjoyed and I enjoyed being with her. She was a very nice lady.

Dearest Joan,
I will miss you terribly until we meet again. I thank you for your annual Christmas cards, and am so very sorry I didn't send you one this year. I didn't send any. If I'd only known... I would have called you.
You probably are not even aware of the tremendous impact you've had on my life. I've loved you since the day I met you. You taught me so much. Your love for animals contributed greatly to love I already had for them. I'll never forget that HUGE aqaurium you ran for years because of that one little catfish. You did not want to disturb his home. What a loving and amazing woman! And you so loved your family. And the friends of your family were always welcome in your home. Rest in peace my beloved friend. We will see each other again with the Father and the Son.
Love, Barbara

Mike, Kathy, Russ, and the rest of you, I know you are grieving. May your memories, your faith, and your love sustain you during this sad time of loss. She will be missed.
