Layton Beverage Obituary

GLOUCESTER - Layton Hubert "Tony" Beverage, 52, of Gloucester, Virginia and formerly of Marlinton, West Virginia passed away on September 1, 2014. Tony served as an educator for 26 years. He started his career in education at Smithfield High School, Isle of Wight County in 1984 as a teacher where Tony taught U.S. History and served as varsity head football coach. He, also, served as Assistant Principal of Forest Elementary/Middle School in Bedford County, as Principal of Hamilton-Holmes Middle School in King William County, as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for Nelson County Public Schools, prior to coming to Gloucester County in 2005 to be the Principal of Gloucester High School. Tony served as Gloucester High School Principal until his retirement in May 2014. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Studies Education from Fairmont State College in 1984, a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from the College of William and Mary in 1989 and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia in 2003. He was named 2010 Outstanding Principal by the University of Virginia Curry School of Education and was named 2009 Outstanding Youth Advocate by the Gloucester County Youth Commission. He was a member of the Gloucester Point Rotary and served as Rotary President in 2008-2009. When not working for the betterment of children through his service in the field of education, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, spending time with family and friends, the beach and hiking on the mountains of West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Sandra H. Beverage; son, Lon D. Beverage; daughter, Hannah R. Beverage; his parents, Layton H. and Hannah K. Beverage; his brother, Charles H. Beverage and his wife, Marilyn; his in-laws, Keith D. and A. Rose Hughes; his cat, Cuddles and many close friends who will greatly miss him. A memorial service for Tony will be held at the Gloucester High School Stadium on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider donations to the Dr. Layton H. "Tony" Beverage Scholarship Fund at Gloucester High School, 6680 Short Lane, Gloucester, VA 23061. These funds will be used to support a yearly scholarship for a graduating senior. If the measure of a man is determined by the size of his heart, Tony Beverage's limitless love for his family, friends and those he served during his career in education will be his everlasting legacy. Until we see him again, we will remember his unfailing good nature and the lessons he taught us about living and loving others.

My children's lives were greatly touched and affected by this man and his family in many positive ways over the years. He was everything a good principal should be and a wonderful mentor to my children who had the pleasure of knowing him on a personal level as well. He was a great, respectable and honorable man and he and his family will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are very sorry for the loss of such a special person and our deepest sympathy is with Sandy, Lon and Hannah. Thank you all for making my children feel special throughout their high school years.

In what seemed like a very short ten years that I worked with Dr. Beverage, he became a leader among us, not over us, with a genuine concern for his family, his staff, and his students. I will miss his leadership, his friendship, and his words of encouragement when he knew I most needed them. And those quirky little expressions on his face shall never be forgotten. He was one of a kind.

I am deeply sadden to learn about Tony's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him when we were Assistant Principals at Forest Middle School. His enthusiasm, compassion, and love for the students was evident in everything he did. He inspired me and others to do our very best to motivate, encourage, and uplift the students daily. I was very fortunate to have known him.
I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Sandy and his lovely children Lon and Hannah. He was so very, very proud of his family.

I was fortunate to be there at the beginning of Tony's stellar career in education.
In 1984 I was librarian at Smithfield High School when Tony arrived at the school. Tony was a great teacher with an extraordinary talent and personality. He was totally dedicated to his students and the school. I'm proud of all that Tony accomplished in education. He rose through the ranks. Tony, your life's passion will live forever and touch unborn generations. May God welcome you with open arms and comfort and Bless your Family

I met Tony only once and instantly liked his sense of humor and his big laugh ! When he left SHS at the end of June in 1991, he gave me the gift of his job. Although I was hired to take his place and teach in his room, his reputation lived on in the students who came into my room. I never did fill those big shoes he left behind.

I was a teacher at Smithfield High School when Tony started his career with us. It was obvious from the beginning that he would become outstanding in the field of education beyond the classroom teacher. His career has been a blessing to many young people across Virginia and he will never be forgotten. May all your happy times together bring you comfort during this sad time. It was my privilege to know him as a fellow teacher. My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers to Sandy, his children, and all other family members.

Dr. Beverage made an impact in the lives the the thousands of students he met., including mine. Future students of GHS were robbed of a great administrator. But it's the 'Tony' and 'Dad' I wish to highlight...as a personal friend, I will cherish the heart-to-hearts...I will cherish the times he went out of his way through a busy schedule to come to my families aid when in need 3 years ago for our youngest daughter-showing his heart, tears and emotion in a real way... I will remember the pride on his face as he cheered on Lon, and later Hannah at the cross country meets..., and Hannah at the many Crew Regattas... He lived for his children-they were his pride and joy. To capture a glimpse of him in his role as 'Daddy' is to witness pure love. And also, I will remember the respect, friendship, and unconditional love he had for Sandy, his soulmate... The funny cutting up and banter between them, the comfortable, welcoming ease between them when visiting at their home- I could go on and on. You will be truly missed. For Lon and Hannah-keep making your daddy proud! And Sandy-you are amazing! My heart and prayers continue for you! Much love to you! For all of The Beverage family-hold tight to your memories and each other. God bless!
