Margaret SILLS-CARTER Obituary

HAMPTON - Margaret Doles Sills-Carter slipped peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Newport News Nursing and Rehab.
Margaret was born on March 25, 1943, in Courtland, Va.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Doles; her mother, Ilean Doles and her brother, Robert (Huck) Doles.
She was a graduate of Huntington High School and attended Norfolk State. She retired from Newport News Public School System after 35 years of service.
She was married to Michael Sills and from this union they had two daughters.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Carter; two daughters, Arvis Abban (Abe), Dawna DuBose; two grandsons, Kevin McDonald II, Kwesi Abban; and a sister, Blanche Gillis.
In celebration of Margaret's life a Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 16, 2010, at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, 3100 Butternut Drive, Hampton, VA 23666. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I am so sorry to learn about Margaret's death. When we lived in Hampton our family Freddie J. Hicks, Jr., (deceased) Carlton and Dawn and myself spent many weekends together with Margaret and Michael. Arvis and Dawn were just little ones and they were favorite playmates of Carlton and Dawn. Margaret would always braid Dawn's hair for me because I never could master a good braid. She was fun loving and always ready for an adventure. Please extend my condolences to your entire family.

To the Sills-Carter family,
I first met Margaret when I was a very young 23 and teaching at Walter Reed Elementary School. She was very kind, helpful and friendly to me, one of three white people in the entire school. It is now 40 years later and I have probably seen her only a handful of times over the years, but I will always treasure the friendship she extended to me. May the memories of your wife and mother comfort you now.

Mrs. Sills was my sons favorite teacher. She had such a heart for children and seemed to know their needs. She will be missed. Our love and prayers are with the family now. Thank you Mrs. Sills for a job well done!

I worked with Margaret many years ago at Drug Emporium, with her sister Blanche. They were great ladies to work with, and Margaret was a burst of laughter. Although I have not seen her in many years, I still remember her smile, and laughter that lit up the room.

I will always remember Margaret as a good friend. She always was friendly when I saw her and she attended the 50th anniversary party our children gave us in 2002. I have her gift in my china cabinet. She was always happy when we saw her.
