William ROBERTSON Obituary

HAMPTON - William T. Robertson Jr. , 96, died peacefully Saturday morning Sept. 25, 2010, with his wife, Jac and family around his bedside.
He was born April 10, 1914, in Petersburg, Va., where he spent his youth. He received a full football scholarship from Petersburg High to the University of Richmond. While there he lettered not only in football but basketball, baseball and golf as well. He quarterbacked and played guard for the only undefeated football and basketball teams in the history of the University of Richmond to date.
He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Upon graduation he went on to teach and coach at Beaumont School for Boys where he met and married his wife and soul mate, Jacqueline Clark. After their first summer together, where he was a lifeguard at Virginia Beach, he went on to coaching positions at Miller School for Boys and Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va.
At the onset of WWII he entered service first as a Red Cross Field Director for the 113th Airborne Division. He later became a Naval Aircraft Gunnery Officer aboard Merchant Marine ships in the Pacific Theater. Bills final naval assignment was on the faculty of Villanova University, Pa., as Physical Fitness Director of the N.R.O.T.C program.
After the war Bill went back to Randolph Macon, coaching there a total of seven years. He left there in 1950 and moved his family to Morganton, N.C., where he was the City Recreational Director for nine years.
Upon leaving Morganton his 20 years of Civil Service began as a Recreational Director in Naples, Italy; Gtmo Bay, Cuba; Hahn AFB, Germany; Bentwaters RAF, England; Moody AFB, Georgia, before coming to settle in Hampton, Va., in 1959, where he worked at Langley AFB until he retired in 1977.
Bill was a very active senior golfer. He won numerous Peninsula, Tidewater and regional tournaments. He won the Virginia State Seniors Golf Championship in 1980 and again in 1983, making him the oldest Virginia State Senior Golf Champion at the age of 69.
He also won the Eastern States Seniors Championship at Kingsmill, Va., in 1981 and the American Golf Association Seniors at Calloway Gardens, Ga., in 1980.
Besides Bill's passion for golf, he also loved gardening, swimming and reading. Before he became infirm he could be seen daily walking and biking the streets of Olde Wythe.
A dear family friend and neighbor recently commented that he never heard Bill say an unkind word about anyone. He was a man who always wanted to help others.
Bill's survivors include, his wife, Jac of 70 years; son, Robbie and wife, Patty; daughters, Lynn and husband, Arnie, Mimi and husband, Blair; and grandchildren, Jimmy, Erin, Ganon, Jonathan and Cole; as well as two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Reed; his brothers, Tom and Donald and his wife, Grace; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors and golfing buddies to cherish his memory.
Bill and Jac Robertson were longtime members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newport News and are currently members of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton. His memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at St. Johns, 100 West Queens Way.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Old Hampton Community Center, 201 Lincoln St., Hampton, Va., 23669. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Mr. Bill as we all know him as at OHCC was one of the nicest people anyone would want to know. Mr. Bill would come in swim his laps and go down to one of our rooms to eat his lunch. He always love to share his lunch. He was really a joy to be around. We were missing him already when he stopped coming to the pool and I would call to check on him. One of his sayings was to me "today is a gift" and he would wait for me to say "thats why they call it the present. He will be truly missed and we loved him here at OHCC. RIP my friend.

I've known and been the neighbor of Bill and Jac Robertson for 36 years in the Old Wythe neighborhood. My fondest memories of Bill are of his kindness toward and interest in my three children as they grew up in Old Wythe. Not only did he and Jac open their beautiful big yard to them for playing in, but he took the time to talk with them, asking what their interests were and how they were doing in school, etc. He truly was a blessing to all of us in the neighborhood and will be missed!

We were born on the same day - 36 years apart. I knew him only briefly, having met in his 96th year, and I'm all the poorer for it. Another of the Greatest Generation leaves us and we are all the poorer for it. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

A BLESSING FOR BILL

May your days and nights be filled with peace,
And may those you love be near.
May the solace of that closeness
Banish any hint of fear.

May the joy you've brought to others
Fill your soul now with that light,
And the memories of happy times
Fill your dreams through darkest night.

For you've lent your strength to many.
You've upheld us in our strife.
Now let those of us who love you
Let you know just how your life

Has been the brightest beacon
For you've shown us how to bear
With great dignity and courage
Both the bad times and the fair.

As a mentor and a leader
You have always been our guide.
As a friend there's been none better.
May you know all this with pride.

All our prayers and thoughts are with you.
May you feel their soothing grace.
May our care and loving hold you
Here within that sacred space.

And may God then grant you courage
When the time to fight is o'er
And be waiting for you smiling,
When you reach his lofty door.

For you'll be borne by angels
That our Lord has sent for you
And in wholeness be rewarded
All your pain will then be through.

Mr. Roberson was such a wonderful man. He was always talking to my children and all the other children in the neighborhood. Playing games with them and letting them play in his yard, especially those snowy days when he got out the sleds for them. He and Jac were such wonderful neighbors. We truely missed them when we moved. Bill will be sadly missed. Our love to the family. Renee Olsovsky

We are so sorry to hear about Bill. He was such a great person who
always found the best in everything. I would love it when he came to
OHCC to swim his laps and then go outdoors to get his vitamin D from the sunshine. He inspired all of us who worked there. Truly he
was a living example of a "Christian"! Our prayers and thoughts are
with you the family as you travel this journey of sorrow and grief.
Your neighbors and friends,
