Gerald SMOOT Obituary

YORKTOWN - Gerald joined the church triumphant today and is joyously walking on both legs for the first time in 15 years. He was born on Nov. 7, 1925, at the Naval Mine Depot, Yorktown, Va., the seventh of nine children.
Gerald served in the United States Navy as a 1st Class Fire Control Technician, during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater (4 stars) and Philippine Liberation (1 ribbon). He served on board the USS Astoria CL90, receiving the Bronze and Silver Stars. Upon his return to the States he married Lois V. DeAlba of Seaford, Va., and was honorably discharged from the Navy in April, 1946. Gerald's work career included Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, Metal Finishing Company, and he retired from Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Va., in 1986.
An avid hunter, Gerald was a member of the James River Rod and Gun Club for 60 years. He loved to fish and had multiple awards for his fishing prowess including a record citation sailfish in 1977. Gerald was a member of several bowling leagues in Newport News and played golf as well.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Earl A. Smoot Sr. and Frankie H. Smoot; four brothers, Earl, Jr., Howard (Buster), Robert, and Bernard; and three sisters, Aileen, Mildred and Pauline.
He is survived by his three children, David G. Smoot (Trina) of Newport News, Phyllis S. Wells of Suffolk, and Catherine S. Eason (Steven) of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Jack F. Smoot (Ethel) of Yorktown; five grandchildren, Zack R. Smith of Newport News, S. Phillip Eason Jr. (Maureen) of Princeton, N.J., Virginia Leigh Eason of Brevard, N.C., Sarah C. Eason of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and D. Nicholas Smoot of Newport News; and two great-grandchildren, Steven P. Eason III and Josephine A. Eason; and a host of nephews and nieces. Also surviving are three beloved Smoot sisters-in-law, Rosa, Aldridge, and Ethel; and his two devoted caregivers, Ellen Quirk and Carla Desravines.
The Smoot family would like to thank the staff and employees at York Convalescent Center, Yorktown, Va., and Heartland Hospice services for their excellent care of our loved one.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Peninsula Funeral Home on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the Peninsula Food Bank, Newport News, Va.

I was suddenly saddened to see Mr. Smoot had just past as I read the paper this morning.I reread the obituary twice to make sure it was him and somehow I found myself smiling inside relecting on all the good chidhood memories of him as he was like a father and friend to me.With much love and my deepest sympathy to all of you ,Mrs Smoot,David,Kathy,Phylis,and all whos lives were touched by him, may you fin d comfort and peace in knowing that hes gone to be with Jesus.I now truly know your loss and the lord as my savior also, as I lost my 23 year 1st born son Ryan Chase.
