L.B. Taylor Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - L.B. (Bob) Taylor, Jr., of Williamsburg, the author of 50 non-fiction books, including 25 on Virginia ghosts, and over 300 national magazine articles, died Feb. 23, 2014. He was 81 years old. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Goens Taylor, his three children, Cindy Taylor of Great Falls, Virginia, Chris Taylor of Clearwater, Florida, and Tony Taylor of Williamsburg, Virginia, and by three grandchildren, Emily Willis, Andrew Myers, and Ryan Taylor. Taylor was a native of Lynchburg, Virginia, and a Journalism graduate of Florida State University. Following service in the U.S. Army in Heidelberg, Germany, he spent ten years as a public information officer for NASA and aerospace contractors at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida where he covered all space flight launches from America's first satellite, Explorer I, in 1958, through the manned missions of Mercury and Gemini, and later reported on the Apollo 11 first manned lunar landing. During his period he served as editor of Spaceport News, NASA's newspaper, for five years. Taylor was a magazine editor for North American Aviation and Rockwell International in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh before moving to Williamsburg in 1974 as public affairs director of BASF Corporation. He retired in 1993. Throughout his career, Taylor also was a free lance writer. His articles appeared in such publications as The Reader's Digest, The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, and True Magazine. His first book "Pieces of Eight, Recovering the Riches of a Lost Spanish Treasure Fleet," was published in 1966 in several languages and is still in print. Other books included America's space programs, a history of Cape Canaveral, and various other subjects ranging from electronic surveillance to hostage taking. In 1983, Taylor published "The Ghosts of Williamsburg," which has sold more than 150,000 copies and led to the origination of the city's popular ghost tours which have entertained hundreds of thousands of visitors. This book was followed by 24 others, including a 13 volume series on Virginia ghosts. In 2007, Taylor was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Virginia's Writer's Club. Over the past 30-plus years he gave hundreds of presentations on the commonwealth's paranormal phenomena to schools, libraries and other organizations all across Virginia, and received many honorary awards. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 2pm-4pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Heritage Humane Society, to your local library or to a charity of your choice. We are so grateful to everyone who has shared memories of my father. Thank you--it means more to my family than we can say. We miss him. Here is one of our favorite photos of him as a young writer.

After all these years, Mr. Taylor is still remembered. Someone today posted on FB about his ghost experience at the Stone House in Manassas and I immediately thought of Mr. Taylor and recommended that he go check out the many books he write on Virginia's ghost encounters and lore. Most assuredly, in all his books, the Stone House is in them somewhere. I miss seeing Mr. Taylor each year at the Fairfax Fall Festival. For years, it was a staple in my fall schedule to go and seek him out for the next of his books that I did not yet own. As someone who has experienced a ghost myself, I found his books fascinating and yes, sometimes quite chilling! I hope this message brings his family joy in knowing your husband, father, grandfather made a lasting impact on so many and is still remembered by us all as the true "legend" of Virginia ghost history. Much love to all. May he continue to rest in peace.

I TALKED TO HIM ON THE PHONE MANY YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS DOING RESEARCH ON THE VA.GHOST FOR A RADIO SHOW. HE ANSWERED THE PHONE AND TO MY SURPRISE HIS WIFE'S NAME WAS BRENDA THE SAME AS MINE. I HAD RECEIVED A CALL FROM MRS. DALTON'S SECRETARY WHO ASKED ME TO COME TO THE GOVERNOR'S MANSION TO FIND THE LADY GHOST HE HAD WRITTEN ABOUT IN HIS BOOK. HE WAS SO KIND AND HELPFUL WITH MY RESEARCH. I was writing about some of my ghosts experiences this morning on my blog and posted to my facebook. So I THOUGHT I CHECK ON MR. TAYLOR AND FOUND THIS REPORT. I WANTED TO THANK HIM FOR ALL HIS SUPPORT AND KINDNESS.His work was very appreciated by so many of my students as I shared his books through the years. thank you, Brenda Bradshaw, profession psychic and radio host on BlogTalkRadio.

As it is Halloween night, I went on a guided ghost walk of the Rosewell Ruins with my good friends. I was speaking of L.B Taylor Jr. as I usually do; especially because the reason I became acquainted with Rosewell was because of the first book of his that I read, "The Ghosts of Virginia". One friend mentioned that he had died and was shocked that I did not know. I was deeply saddened to find this out. I had not seen him in a few years, and I had invited him to do a Mystery Day event at my sister's library and had not heard back and wondered why. Now I know, but I didn't expect this. My deepest sympathy to all of his loving family! I am so sorry for your great loss!
I met Mr. Taylor at the Fall Festival in 1995. I was intrigued by his stories and bought one of his books, "The Ghosts of Williamsburg", which he signed for me. I have been a fan ever since. I went to years of his book talks at libraries all over, and he always had time to chat with me. I introduced my sister and my friends to him and his books as well, and brought him scads of new fans. :-) I started working for an art company in 2006 that was contracted at Busch Gardens, so consequently I got to visit with him quite a bit every fall when he was a guest author selling his books for a weekend. We took many pictures together, and I am hoping I can locate them, expecially now. He was so friendly, and interesting, and a joy to be around. One time some friends of mine and I went to see his talk at the Carrot Tree restaurant, and the restaurant lost our reservation. He gave us his table, because his wife was sick and couldn't come, and he said he wouldn't need it. He was so humble and kind! I have many of his books that I will cherish always. I was just listening to a ghost CD of his with my Mom 2 days ago, which we were enjoying so much. And here I didn't even know that he was gone. :-( At least I can be comforted by the fact that he will live on forever through his works. He made a great impact on me, and I will never forget him. May he live on in all of our hearts forever!!

Just learn of Mr. Taylor's passing. I have enjoyed his ghost books over the years and was always on the lookout for the next one. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the yearly Center Hill event a couple of years ago, he signed my book and we spoke for a few minutes about ghosts and getting his books on a Kindle format. Very nice gentleman, he will be missed.

I have one letter that he sent me last year telling me just to sit down and make time for writing. My condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

Like everyone, I'll miss L.B. Every year, he and I were set up in adjacent author's booths at the Bizarre Bazaar in Richmond before Christmas. My family and I enjoyed talking with him -- and watching him get out the door right at closing time every time of the show. :) A very good guy. Sympathies for your loss.

I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Taylor. He wrote some of my all-time favorite reads. It was awesome knowing each year I went to the fall festival that he would be there and I could have a book or two signed. It was always the first thing I did when I got there. Thank you for sharing your knowlege and stories. You may be gone but you will not be forgotten. You will be missed!

My condolences to the Taylor family. My mother and father (MD and Blanche Galloway) spoke often of Bob and I remember the few years my parents and I were in Williamsburg and knew the Taylors. My mother passed away last year and I was going through her books a few months ago and found one that Bob had autographed and given to them. How ironic that I had reconnected with Cindy a few days after finding the book and seeing Cindy on Facebook. May you all remember all of the good times. Gay Lynn Galloway Armstrong
