Charles Witt Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Mar. 4 to Mar. 5, 2012.
Charles F. Witt Jr., 76, of Crozet, died on Friday, March 2, 2012, at a local nursing home.

He was born on August 8, 1935, in Crozet, a son of the late Charles F. Witt Sr. and Meta Ellinger Witt. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances R. Witt; and a sister, Elizabeth Gavin. He is survived by three sons, Richard E. Witt of Brooklyn, NewYork, Chuck Witt and his wife, Cheri, David Witt and his wife, Stephanie; and one daughter, Sara Witt, all of Crozet; two sisters, Marjorie Dobbins of Crozet and Joanne Whitaker of Stuarts Draft; and an uncle, George Ellinger of Greenwood. Charles was raised in Greenwood and lived his entire adult life in Crozet. He was the beloved principal at the Crozet Elementary School in Albemarle County from 1966 until 1990, and he retired with the building. He was also a member of the Tabor Presbyterian Church where he donated a great deal of time to the upkeep of the church. Along with the building maintenance he also was an elder of the church for many years. Charles graduated from the University of Virginia in 1956, and was a huge sports fan where he hardly ever missed a home basketball game from 1968 until 2006.

His hobbies included woodworking, building birdhouses, which still adorn the trees around his property, as well as, Christmas gifts that are still cherished by his children. He was an avid fisherman at Beaver Creek Lake and Sugar Hollow, and he loved to camp with his family in the mountains of Western Virginia. Charles also spent time in Oak Island, North Carolina, on summer beach trips with his family. After the love of his life, Frances, passed, his five granddaughters (Charlie's Angels) became his cherished possessions. Even in the final stages of his illness, seeing them brought that twinkle in his eye. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Tabor Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Jewel-Anne Parton officiating. Interment will follow at the Rockgate Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2012, at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Crozet.

Donations may be made to the Mountainside Senior Living in Crozet, VA 22932. Anderson Funeral Service of Crozet is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. and Mrs. Witt were 2 of the sweetest, kindest people that I ever had the pleasure of knowing (she was my preschool teacher at Tabor Presbyterian, he was my Elementary school principal). I know they are now together in Heaven. May your memories bring you comfort in this difficult time!

Rick,Chuck,David,Sarah,I experienced your Dad not only as a Principle for my Daughter in Elementary but on a weekly basis when FRAN & my wife were going through Chemo. I learned a man there for Fran as I was trying to be for Linda. I learned a man other than a Principle for my daughter but a Man there for his wife. My wife loved Fran because of sufferings, I loved your Dad for the same. He was there, and I felt such a connection with him. at that time.Thankful for him! Mel McAllister
