David was my first love and we shared four years together. He guided me through the death of my father, taught me all things as a parent would, and helped me grow with love. He once told someone we had been friends for over 50 years, and we were. We exchanged phone calls, emails, IMs, and visited at his home. We read together on-line and he continued to teach me with his amazing intellect and kindness. I still talk to him in my prayers every day and miss him so very, very much. My deep sympathy and prayers go to his brother Michael. May God give you strength Mike.

I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to Mr. Dickey's family and friends.
I only met Mr. Dickey once, over the chess board at the 1984 Virginia State Chess Closed Championship (first big tournament in which I participated). I knew that he had been a past President of the Virginia Chess Federation (1968-69). He knew that I was very nervous and was very kind and analyzed the game with me afterwards. I enjoyed meeting him. He helped me along the path to the enjoyment of chess as a lifetime hobby.

I was lucky enough to know David for the past 10 years. I will miss having coffee with him every Thursday. It was a privilege to know him. He was kind, funny, and I'll miss him.

No mere words ever really "help" at a time like this. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Blessed Be.
Virginia has lost one of her far too few truly honest and mind-blowingly able attorneys, whose shining intellect eclipses that of all other persons in my recollection. I have lost one of my few real friends, and deeply regret that I was not informed so that I could have attended the service and paid small but greatly deserved honour. David's help was invaluable to me on a number of difficult occasions; his friendship over the past more-than-50 years is something I shall always treasure.
Hey, Royal SmartPerson, if you're paying attention -- I miss ya, old son!

David was my best man, one of my most frequent chess playing buddies, and otherwise one of my closest friends during my graduate school years. We even climbed Old Rag together and played what may have been the first speed chess game ever played at the summit. He was my predecessor as president of the Virginia Chess Federation, and we were active in the same political group at the University.
Over the years, as I moved away from central Virginia, our contacts dwindled and my visits to Stanardsville became less frequent. I had not seen him in the last two decades, though we had exchanged e-mails and a couple of telephone calls.
I have lost a dear friend. My condolences go to all his family. My prayers and those of my wife are with all of you.
