Eddie Fleming Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Dec. 13 to Dec. 16, 2009.

Eddie Leroy Fleming

Eddie Leroy Fleming, 74, of Charlottesville, Virginia, departed this life at his residence on Friday, December 11, 2009.

Eddie was born on May 19, 1935, in Morganton, North Carolina, to the late Ernest and Velma Thomas Fleming. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Fleming of Atlantic City, New Jersey; and one sister-in-law, Dotty Fleming of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

He graduated from Olive Hill High School in Morganton, North Carolina, and earned his bachelors degree in Physical Education and Health from Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina. He began his teaching career at W.E. Parker High School in Edgefield, South Carolina where he became a master teacher and AA State basketball coach. He taught for four years at Yancey Elementary School in Esmont, Virginia, and later at Scottsville Elementary School in Scottsville, Virginia. Eddie also taught at Walton Middle School in Southern Albemarle County until his retirement from the Albemarle County School System in 1997.

He mentored many students and athletes, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. Because of his dedication and love for students the Walton Middle School gymnasium was named in his honor. He became a recognizable cornerstone at athletic events at the University of Virginia. Eddie was initiated in the Xi Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., March 18, 1967. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church until his illness. Known to many as an avid golfer he enjoyed participating and bringing home trophies from many golf tournaments.

Eddie leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 45 years, Carol E. Fleming; a daughter, Tanya Fleming of Charlottesville; three brothers, Ernest Fleming III and his wife, Joyce, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Gaston Fleming of Greenville, South Carolina, and James Monroe and his wife, Peggy, of Concord, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.

Throughout his life, Eddie gave of himself so that others could receive.

Celebration of Life Services will be held 12 p.m. Thursday, December 17, 2009, at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Avenue, Charlottesville, Virginia, with the Reverend Don Moore officiating and the Reverend Warren Dawkins delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Route 29 North, Charlottesville, Virginia.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services.

Condolences may be paid to the family at www.jfbellfuneralhome.com.

J. F. Bell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

I'm going to speak just as I would if he was standing in front of me: "Aww Shoot, Mr. Fleming. Man, thank you so much for teaching me LIFE! You weren't just a gym teacher to me at Walton, but a mentor...and for the years I attended Walton, you WERE the man in my life...the father figure who guided me. You taught me how to play HORSE in the 6th grade, full on basketball in the 7th grade, and my coach in the 8th grade. I've love the sport in all the years I've played since...thank you for that. You yelled at me but never broke my spirit because I always heard the lesson. I love you. I will miss you. And thank you."

I was sad to hear of Mr. Fleming's passing I have fond memories of being in his gym class in Walton. I recall a kind smile and shake of his head as he evaluated my basketball skills. Mr. Fleming had the unique ability to maintain control when teaching and instructing without losing the respect and admiration of his students. Believe me maintaining decorum during gym with my Walton class was no easy feat. I'm glad to hear the Walton gym was named after him well deserved.

Mr. Fleming was my Phys. Ed. teacher at B.F. Yancey Elementary School. He was a very good teacher, there was no fooling around in his class. I knew our potential so he didn't take no for an answer in his class. May God continue to bless his family. God gave him wonderful years and also gave him the gift in sports and excercise to be effective in his job. He was certainly a mentor to young men!

I can not express how saddened I was to hear of Mr. Flemming's passing. As well as many others, he was my PE teacher at Walton Middle School. I will never forget the very first day he walked out to greet us. I was amazed at his height, yet shaking in my tennis shoes at the same time because I thought he was mean. By the end of the year, he became my favorite teacher, and one that I would never forget. He was a wonderful man that touched the lives of so many. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. RIP Mr. Flemming.

My heart was saddened when I heard of Mr. Fleming's passing. He made such an impact on my life because he always expected me to do my best, and he appreciated my aggressiveness. When I would see him around town, he ALWAYS remembered my name and gave me a big hug.

Like many others, Mr. Fleming was my gym teacher and one that I'll never forget! I can remember as a 5th grader going to the middle school, for the tours like they do, and having a gym class with the 6th graders and see this very tall man walk out on the gym floor! We made sure to follow directions because if we didn't, he'd yell and make us do whatever all over again! That happened a time or two! (lol). He was a very strict teacher and he will be missed. Like others have said, when I would see him in public we would chat and say hello. To Mr. Fleming's family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. God bless!

I am so sad to hear about Mr. Fleming's death. He was truly one of my favorite teachers because he ALWAYS expected the best we had to give and as long as we gave it, he was happy! This always motivated me to be better in his class. He had the perfect combination of discipline and fun ( I always loved it when he wanted to yell, but actually couldn't help but laugh). We were all fortunate to have him as our teacher and he will truly be missed. May God's grace and mercy rest upon his soul and his family during their time of grief. He touched so many lives. I had Mr. Fleming as a PE teacher at Walton. I remember the first time I saw him he frightened me because of how tall he was. But when he talked he was very soft spoken. He was definitely a giant among men. I saw him a few months ago when I was at Kroger and I spoke to him and told him I was one of his former students and I couldn't believe he remembered me. He made a very lasting impression in my life and I will truly miss seeing him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Fleming family. Mr. Fleming was my P.E. teacher at Walton (8/79-6/82) He was one of the best P.E. teachers that anyone could ever have. He certainly was stern but that was one of his fine qualities in which made students like him even more. We had no other choice but to behave in his class. He left a lasting impression on many of his students. I have talked about Mr. Fleming numerous times, to my own children, and would point him out to them when I'd see him in Charlottesville...I would always see him in Krogers. May God bless the family at this time. R.I.P Mr. Fleming

To The Fleming Family,
I was Blessed to have Mr. Fleming as a Health and P.E. teacher and a basketball coach at Scottsville Jr. High School in the late 1960s. He instilled many morals and values in his students throughout his teaching career. A tough taskmaster when he needed to be but always quick to praise for a job well done. I have many fond memories of my P.E. and basketball days at Scottsville. May God's Peace and Comfort enfold the family during this time and may we look forward to being together again.

Thanks Carol for allowing Eddie to car-pool with me for many years. During that car-pool tenure, we solved the problems of Walton in 20 min. Eddie was a caring, sincere and kind individual that was glad to share his expertise with us as we traveled. He made it possible for use to feel secure in the classroom because of the advice he shared.
The hardest part of our car-pool experience was when I had to say 'good-bye' when we moved to NC. We did not stay in contact, but I took with me many, many memories. Thanks for allowing me to know you!
As you go from life to eternal life, rest assured that you did what was necessary to maintain a life that will be remembered.
I will always remember the many laughs, tears, joys and sorrows we shared during our car-pool days!
Thanks Carol for lending us Eddie for 40 min. a day for over 13 years as we car-pooled to Walton and back.
