Essie Irene Mawyer Tooley, 86, of Scottsville, died on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at the Hospice House in Charlottesville, Virginia.

She was born on April 2, 1924, in North Garden, Virginia, the daughter of the late Archie G. and Lizzie M. Mawyer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" E. Tooley; two sisters, Phyllis Dudley and Catherine Wood; and seven brothers, Goodman Mawyer, Thomas Mawyer, Fulton Mawyer, Floyd Mawyer, Leroy Mawyer, John Mawyer and Harold Mawyer.

Essie was a graduate of Red Hill School.

Surviving her are two sons, Roger Tooley and his wife, Sandra, of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, and an estranged son, Donald Tooley and his wife, Elizabeth, of Scottsville; two grandchildren, Bonnie Tooley Wiese and her husband, Michael, of Palmyra and Travis Tooley of Oak Ridge, North Carolina; one great-grandson, Michael Alexander "Alex" Wiese of Palmyra; and one sister, Marie Chisholm of Charlottesville.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2010, at the Fox Memorial Baptist Church in Scottsville with the Reverend Randy Golladay and Chaplain Daniel Malcolm officiating. Interment will follow at the Alberene Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2010, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

The family expresses special thanks to Margaret N. Tooley, Malcolm and the late Gertrude Butler, Dr. Michael Santulli and the wonderful staffs at Hospice of the Piedmont and The Hospice House for going the extra mile during Essie's illness.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
