George Johnson Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on Dec. 8, 2011.
George Reynolds Johnson

Mr. George Reynolds Johnson passed early evening on Saturday, December 3, 2011, with family surrounding him, as he went home to be with the Lord.

He will be welcomed home by his grandparents, Wilfred F. Wilson Sr. and Frances Eilise Wilson and James A. Rice Sr.; and brother, Jeffery O. Johnson.

The fourth of six children born to proud parents in Charlottesville, Virginia, on September 15, 1957. He was baptized at an early age at the First Baptist Church, in Charlottesville, Virginia. In early 2011, he recommitted his life to God and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior with communion with one of his brothers.

George established a distinguished career of service at the University of Virginia Medical Center in the transportation department for 27+ years. He had a reputation for integrity and love for all his patients and families that visited the hospital. He brought a smile to the faces of everyone he met each and every day. The commitment to excellence to his patients resulted in him being awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award in 1995 and being recognized for 20 years of Outstanding and Valuable Service in 2004.

He was fondly called "Georgie" by the family. He loved his family and friends, which was demonstrated daily by his actions. He was especially fond of his sisters-in-law and loved them like blood relatives. George was an avid sports fan. While he loved most sports, the game of football was one of his passions and his team was the Oakland Raiders. He knew the nuisances of the game and was great in the art of sports debate. His favorite athletes were Bruce Lee in the martial arts and Dale Earnhardt in Nascar racing. George leaves to mourn his passing and to celebrate his eternal life, his beloved mother, Rosemarie Johnson; father, Robert E. Johnson Sr.; his grandmother, Annie V. Rice of Washington, D.C.; three brothers and one sister, Ronnie N. Johnson (Robin) of Richmond, Virginia, Robert E. Johnson Jr. (Jeannie) of Dover, Delaware, Larry L. Johnson and Eilise A. Johnson of Charlottesville; his special aunts, Sallie W. Robinson and Ada W. Monroe of Charlottesville, Belinda Young (Danny) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; great- uncle and aunts, Sandy Wilson of Silver Springs, Maryland, Minnie W. Gardner and Sally P. Wilson of Charlottesville; his uncles, Wilfred F. Wilson Jr. of Charlottesville, Larry D. Rice of Washington, D.C. and Leonard J. Rice (Marcia) of Greenbelt, Maryland; and a host of adoring cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011, at First Baptist Church, 632 W. Main Street, Charlottesville, with repast to follow at the church. Pastor Hodari K. Hamilton will officiate. Memorial gifts and flowers may be sent to McClenny Funeral Service, 600 Henry Ave., Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Services of comfort are entrusted to the staff of McClenny Funeral Service, Inc.

It will be 9 years tomorrow that you left. I try not to think of you this time of the year but, our friendship and love for each other would not let me do that. Although I just returned from home Sunday it doesn't feel like home because so many of my friends have gone on. I miss your friendship, your laugh, that crazy little bow leg walk up yours. Most of all, I miss the sound of your voice. I miss the smile in your eyes. I miss you're my best friend.

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of your love one. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord so just know that George is resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior. And he is too wise to make a mistake. Earth has no sorrow that heaven can not heal. Hold on to the memories of George and he will forever be in your hearts.

Most of my career at UVA was spent in the hospital. I remember George well for his warm greetings and smile when we met in the hallways. Patients were certainly blessed by this fine young man. As another person wrote, “he had a special way of making your day brighter”! May God bless the family during this difficult time.

George was a kind and giving person, even up to the week of his death he was thinking of others. George knew my husband shared a love for the Raiders so he sent my husband a memorabilia from the Raiders collection. He also did a great service for the University of Virginia Health System. He is greatly missed.

To the Johnson Family,

I offer my and family prayers to you duing this difficult period. George set an example for all to follow. I had the honor or speaking with him at Reids Market about a year ago. He advised me of his illness an instead of being down hearted, he spoke of the kindness of his family and support team at UVA and his faith. He will be missed and remembered as a positive example to all who knew him.

To the Johnson Family,
We are so very sorry to hear of George's passing. However, per my many conversations with him and discussions of his great pain. I celebrate his homegoing knowing that his pain is no more. You all were great neighbors to us for many years on Paoli St. George was one of a kind and always wore a smile. I will remember the thoughts of my daughter at Girl Scout cookie season, "mommy, we have to go see Mr. George." Because she knew, that Mr. George would buy so many cookies we never really needed to go any further. Hold on to your precious memories and may God comfort you through this sorrowful time.
