Jeffrey Duwe Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Jan. 11 to Jan. 13, 2010.

Jeffrey Scott Duwe

Jeff Duwe passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, from injuries sustained in a fall on the ice the previous day. He was 28 years of age. Surrounding his bedside were many family and friends who spent Jeff's final hours reminiscing about each of their wonderful experiences of Jeff's life. He had a beautiful spirit and he touched the lives of all those he encountered.

Jeff was born in Traverse City, Michigan, on May 11, 1981, to Arthur "Chip" and Barbara Duwe. He graduated from Traverse City Central High School in June 1999 and from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, in December 2004 with a B.S. Degree in Movement Science. After working in Grand Rapids in the health and fitness fields for several years, he relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia to enroll in the Program of Radiologic Technology at the University of Virginia, from which he graduated, ranking first in his class in clinical studies, in June 2008. He loved Virginia, especially the mountains, and so he stayed after graduation to work at the University in the Radiologic Technology Department.

Jeff was a devoted son, brother, and most recently, uncle. He had an amazing sense of humor and an ability to turn ordinary situations into special ones. He had a passion for the outdoors, sports, and loved to hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He enjoyed frequent trips to Charlotte to visit his aunts and to attend football games.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Nan Duwe, and by his maternal grandparents, Francis and Bonnie Rogers.

He is survived by his parents, Chip and Barbara Duwe of Traverse City; his sister, Kara and her fiance, Tom, and brother, Matthew, sister-in-law, Amy, and nephew, Everett, all of Grand Rapids; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his many friends and colleagues at the University of Virginia Health System.

Celebrations of Jeff's life will be held in both Charlottesville and in Michigan at dates to be determined.

Jeff was an organ donor so many people will have the gift of life as a result of Jeff's unselfish spirit.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jeff's name to LifeNet www.lifenethealth.org, which arranged for Jeff's organ donations, to Gift of Life Michigan www.giftoflifemichigan.org which arranges organ donations in Michigan, or to the Jeffrey Scott Duwe Memorial Scholarship Fund, mailed to Gina Christopher, Department of Radiology, Box 800377, Charlottesville, VA 22908. Program information may be viewed at www.healthsystem.virginia.edu\internet\radiology.

The family would like to thank Jeff's many friends, the medical staff who provided loving care to him in his final days and to LifeNet.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Dear Duwe Family, we are sorry we couldn't make the trip to TC this weekend, but we wanted to let you know that you have all been in our prayers.

We will always remember Jeff's chipper demeanor and how he had such a way with people. He knew how to brighten a room with his mere presence!

Jeff was a special young man, and Jen and I both have such fond memories of him. His spirit truly lives on in all the lives he has touched.

Dear Duwe Family - Jen just called and told me the horrible news of Jeff's death. The last time we saw him was at Matt and Amy's wedding, so handsome in his tux, and not looking at all like "Little Duwe," but the fine young man he had become.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Barb & Chip, I worked with Jeff in Grand Rapids before he moved to Virginia. He was such an encouraging and caring young man. He was so helpful and dependable to me in the Physical Therapy department. He made a real impression on me and I wondered how he was progressing in school. I still have post cards that I collected for him and wanted to give to him for his collection. Every time my family camps in TC I think of Jeff and I will always remember him.
My prayers are with you. Only the Lord Most High can know why Jeff was called home so early. May God's peace help you through this difficult time.

I met Jeff when he came to UVa as a student in the Radiology Tech program here in Charlottesville. He spent the first 4 weeks of his rotation working with me doing portable x-rays all over the hospital and in the NICU. He was scared, to say the least, of touching the babies- but I told him I would break him of that- and that one day it would pay off for him. It did. After teaching him everything I know- from x-rays to changing diapers- he quickly became one of the favorite techs in the NICU and out on the pediatric floor as well. He referred to himself as the "prodigy" student, and I had to agree- he was! We often joked about it.
I have 2 sons and as thought about my own boys, I thought that if they were halfway across the country from me, I would want someone to be 'looking out' for them. So I made a big dish of lasagne for him and we were instant friends after that! He said the only lasagne better was his Mom's..He referred to it as "Mulva Lasagne" as we had that 'Seinfeld connection' as well.
I have so many happy memories of this awesome guy..he truly was special and he touched many people- including me.
I am so lucky to have know you and call you 'friend'.
To the Duwe family, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers daily. If there is anything you need here in Charlottesville, you have my number- please let me know. I am looking forward to seeing you again as we celebrate your amazing son's life.
~hugs~

I'm still very sad about the loss of Jeff... I worked with Jeff down in Charlottesville when he was an x-ray student and tech. asst. He was my favorite student to work with, he was like working with another Tech. I moved back to Michigan about a year and half ago and he is one of my friends I missed the most. Jeff emailed me about month ago asking if there were any jobs back here in Michgan, at my hospital (I was very excited about the idea of working with him again). I miss him and my love goes to his family. Jeff, I'm luck to have had you in my life... You have made me a better person..... You were a good friend.... I hope to see you again someday.... This is a sad time. I love always buddy.

Jeff was one of my dearest friends in high school. I have so many fond memories of high school that include Jeff and I will cherish them forever. From riding around TC in his Jeep, to football and baseball games, and just hanging out. He was a great support and was always willing to listen when I needed to talk, and make me laugh when I was feeling down. I will never forget how lucky I was to have him as a friend. I am so proud of his organ donations, what a wonderful way for him to give in our time of loss. Jeff has saved so many lives. It was my pleasure getting to know his family in HS, especially Kara and Barb ...and I am thinking of all of you so often now. You are making Jeff proud every day with your courage and strength. I hope I am able to make it up to TC to celebrate his life with you all! Love you JSD-- you are missed!!
