Margie Carter Obituary

Published by Daily Progress on Oct. 31, 2009.

Margie A. Carter

On Christmas Day, December 25, 2008, at 7:10 p.m., our beloved mother and friend, Margie Ann Lohr Carter, 76, died due to a stroke. To all concerned, her passing was peaceful and without discomfort. Her family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the thoughtful care rendered by the Emergency Room and ICU staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital during her final hours with us as well as to the entire staff of The Laurels of Charlottesville for their patience and loving care for the seven weeks prior to her death.

She is survived by three siblings, Edward Lohr, Doris Garnett and Mabel Kibler; her three children, Gloria Langley, Gary Carter and Donna Duffield; her three grandchildren, Lester Drumheller Jr., Angela Jones and Cory Duffield; two great-grandchildren, Kylah Jones and Camron Jones; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Margie was born on December 1, 1932, in Orange, Virginia - an early Christmas present to her mother and father, Novie and Jesse Lohr. She became part of a loving family which would eventually grow to one of 12 children. Margie grew up in a small town rural area during the most trying times of our nation's modern history. Despite the challenges her family faced, she had a fulfilling childhood because she was taught well by her parents how to deal with hardship and the value of family. These important lessons would serve her well later in life.

Soon after finishing high school, Margie fell in love and married while still a teenager. By 1960, she had given birth to her three children and by 1962 her young family had settled into a new home in Charlottesville, painstakingly built by her husband and extended family members. She truly enjoyed hosting family events and gatherings for friends and her door was always open to those needing help. By 1968, Margie found herself facing the challenge of becoming a single mother raising three children and did so with grace and strength. She was always a devoted mother and very protective of her children. Her first job outside of motherhood was in the Jewelry Department at Kmart and went on to earn a promotion to personnel manager. She enjoyed working there very much, but a few years later decided to take a position in the Accounting Department at Centel where she remained until retiring in 1990.

Margie was a very caring, outgoing person who loved the simple things in life. She loved the outdoors during the warm months of the year, whether poolside or by the shore at the lake or beach and was always up for a good barbecue. She also became an avid and accomplished bowler. Margie was also a huge Elvis Presley and country music fan and loved dancing. These were just some of her pastimes she took great pleasure in sharing with family and friends. Margie made many wonderful friends in Charlottesville, but that came easy to her wherever she went because when she became your friend you knew you had a best friend.

The memorial service will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens 12 p.m. Saturday, November 7, 2009. It is open to any and all who wish to attend. The family will begin receiving guests at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, if anyone would like to make a donation to a local charity, the family suggests the S.P.C.A. or the Santa Fund which provides shoes, clothing and other essentials to children in need throughout central Virginia and can be reached at 806 East High Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

Margie had a great love for children and animals and would be immensely honored for any support of these fine organizations.

To my Mom, I have so many things too thank you for I don't really know where too begin. Thank you for shaping me in to the person I have become; for making me strong in spirit and for giving me the tools I needed in raising a really great child. I think about you every day and miss you more than I can say. So many times I wish I could talk with you. Thank you for being such an AWESOME grandma to Cory and for all the time you spent with her while she was growing up. All the camping trips you took her on, just the two of you. I love you mama.... I will always be, as you called me, "your right arm" and "your baby girl".
