Wald Sr.

Richard David Wald Sr., 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 13, 2010, after a brief illness.

Mr. Wald was born on September 11, 1924, in Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late John R. and Emma Gulbrandson Wald.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Engstrom Wald of Palmyra; his son, Richard Wald Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Palmyra; his daughter, Anne Wald Wallace of Memphis, Tennessee; a son Robert Wald of Irvine, California; a sister, Audrey Wald Barron of Lewistown, Pennsylvania; a grandson, Ian Wallace of Memphis, Tennessee; a granddaughter, Veronica Wald of Canterbury, New Hampshire; step grand-children, Russ and Chris Payne of Charlottesville; a brother-in-law, William R. Engstrom of Laramie, Wyoming; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wald, who was a Naval Aviator serving in World War II, graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Commerce and Finance after returning from the war. He was, for many years, a regional sales manager in the John R. Wald Company, Wald Industries, and Prismo Safety Corporation. The Wald's resided in Pennsylvania, California, and Tennessee before moving to Virginia to reside with their oldest son and daughter-in-law. He loved the Virginia countryside and his place in the country.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Wald was preceded in death by his siblings, twin brother, Rolf Wald, Phyllis Henry, Solveig Horn and John R. Wald Jr.

A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Wald's life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Mount Eagle Baptist Church, 2419 Buck Island Road, Charlottesville, Virginia, with the Reverend Sidney E. Craig officiating.

The family wishes to extend their grateful appreciation to Hospice of the Piedmont for their aid and assistance over the past several months of Mr. Wald's illness.

Thacker Brothers Funeral Home of Scottsville is handling the arrangements.
