Roscoe Phillips Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Oct. 24 to Oct. 30, 2010.

Roscoe H. Phillips

Roscoe H. Phillips died after a long illness on Thursday, October 21, 2010, at age 96.

He was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, on March 10, 1914, the oldest of Edward C. and Ada Phillips' three sons.

After many years of working for Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe in Taiwan, Germany, and Spain, he moved with his family to Charlottesville, to retire. Retirement did not last long for this active, multi-talented man. He soon returned to working as Electronics Lab Coordinator at Piedmont Virginia Community College, enjoying interaction with students and colleagues until he finally retired at age 88.

Roscoe also known as Phil, was a loved brother, husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend, a generous man of great integrity. Many sought his advice. His motto in life was "everything happens for the best".

He was "Mr. Fix-it", who could restore everything, from broken toys, complicated electronic equipment, to broken hearts. His favorite pastime, camping with his family, took us to places as far away as Nova Scotia, the West Coast, and Mexico, and as close as Lake Sherando.

He will be greatly missed by his friends and family: his brother, Elwood and nephew, Michael Phillips of Orlando, Florida; his wife of 51 years, Luise, and their two daughters, Linda Phillips of Madrid, Spain, and her husband, Juan Ignacio, and two children, Jacob and Stella; Audrey Phillips Henelius, of Kimito, Finland, and her husband, Patrik, and their children, Emma, Sophia Viggo and Aurora; his daughter from his first marriage, Marilyn Reavis and her husband, Gary, of Van, Texas, and their daughters, Jennifer Arent and her husband, Brian, of Huntsville, Alabama, and Amy Williams and her husband, Duayne, of Van, Texas.

A memorial service for Roscoe will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, October 31, 2010, at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 2575 Garth Road, Charlottesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 or the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 296, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

I first met Roscoe when I came to PVCC in 1999. Imagine my surprise that we had an employee in his eighties. But as I got to know Roscoe,I quickly learned that age is just a number. This man was young at heart and young in spirit. He was loved by faculty and students at PVCC. He lived a long life but he still left this world too soon.---Frank Friedman, President PVCC
