Mrs. Rozelle "Rockie" Eckford Dinwiddie of Augusta, Georgia, died on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Brandon Wilde in Evans, Georgia.

Memorial services will be held at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church 2 p.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011, with the Reverend Leslie Holmes officiating.

Mrs. Dinwiddie was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, Doctor J. Gray Dinwiddie.

Her survivors include two sons, Stephen G. and his wife, Lesley C. Dinwiddie, and George R. and his wife, Gail D. Dinwiddie; two daughters, Martha D. and her husband, Fordyce H. Mason and Susan D. and husband, Dr. William C. Small; one brother, Jason I. Eckford; two sisters, Margaret E. Smith and Dorothy E. Wooster; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dinwiddie grew up in Portsmouth and Charlottesville, Virginia. After their marriage, she moved with her husband to Clemson, South Carolina, where he was a professor of chemistry. In 20 years there, she was very active in her church as a Sunday school teacher and crib nursery caregiver, Troop Leader and Consultant for the Girl Scouts organization, the YMCA summer day camp, and other community activities.

In 1968, she moved to Augusta, Georgia, where her husband was the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Augusta College. There she was very involved in Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church serving again in the crib nursery for 17 years, was ordained as a Ruling Elder in 1982, and was honored in 1994 with Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership. Along with her husband Gray, she volunteered full time with Habitat for Humanity for eight years as treasurer, head of acquisitions, and builder as well as The Georgia Partners Association.

She also served as treasurer for the Friends of the Augusta Library and for the Augustans Together for which she was honored with the Outstanding Service Award in 2000. Throughout Dean Dinwiddie's tenure, she organized, prepared, and hosted large dinner parties introducing new college faculty. Furthermore, she designed and made the prototype for the official flag for the city of Augusta. She and Gray supported and chaperoned the Augusta College Jazz Ensemble and the Chamber Choir as well as generally supporting other arts groups in Augusta.

Mrs. Dinwiddie's family extends sincere thanks to Janet Petersen and her select group of dedicated caregivers who cared for her so diligently in her final months.

Steve, Martha, George and Susan, I was your Dad's second PhD student at Clemson finishing in 1964. He made learning fun and was a wonderful and patient mentor. Rockie took a major role in looking after the families of Gray's graduate students and we greatly appreciated her care and concern. My wife and I always loved your Mom and Dad and considered them role models for life. Your Mom oversaw our children at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church and your Dad was our Sunday School teacher there. We enjoyed dinner at your home and loved to hear them talk about you as you grew into adults. We enjoyed your Dad's love of jazz music and, on one occasion, sharing that with him in New Orleans, though missing your Mom then as now. We also enjoyed having your Dad visit us for a weekend when he was near our home while serving Naval duty in Alabama. I followed your Dad's lead into academia and, like Gray, was a chemistry professor, and, taking his mild-mannered even-headed approach to leadership was also a dean and university provost. My wife Nancy, following Rockie's model filled many service roles and we both were sunday school teachers and are now officers of our church. It is hard to think of any two people who have influenced our lives more than Gray and Rockie. Rockie has obviously made an impact every where she has lived and will surely stir things up in Heaven as she takes on her next service role. Bless you all and your families.

It's obvious where Susan's lifelong commitment to public service originated. It's clear that many people benefited from the Dinwiddies' years of compassionate and generous labor. We are blessed to have Susan and Bill serve so graciously and with such humility in our church and community.

We never had the privilege of meeting Mr. and Mrs. Dinwiddie. However, we have had the privilege of serving in a church home fellowship group and becoming life-long friends with their daughter Susan and her husband Bill Small. It is obvious that Susan's parents left a wonderful legacy through passing on their faith, their values, and their love for music and art to their children and grandchildren. Our prayers are with the Dinwiddie family and all who knew and loved them. Sincerely,
Joan and Alex Stevens, Oxford, GA.

George, Martha, Steve, Susan

My memories are from long ago, but came flooding back upon reading of your mother's passing. Mostly of her "care and feeding" of two little boys (George and me) whenever I was over to play. Susan, you were the first little baby I had ever been allowed to touch. It meant so much that your mother trusted an ~8 year old boy to hold her newest precious one.

Our prayers are with you all. Love,

Harv

The last big time they were in Charleston was New Year's Eve 1999 and they were the life of the party.

What a wonderful life and legacy Rocky leaves behind. I know she will be sorely missed.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
