Shirley Clark Obituary

Published by The Daily Sentinel from May 24 to May 25, 2008.
Shirley Clark, 71, local Realtor of Nacogdoches, went to be with our Lord on May 23, 2008, following a short but courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's) disease. She was born December 1, 1936, in Archer County, Texas, the daughter of the late Frank and Evelyn Reid. Shirley was a Realtor for 32 years and loved selling houses. However, her greatest thrills came not from selling houses but in selling "Nacogdoches" to newcomers. Numerous times she was selected as the favorite Realtor in Nacogdoches, not only by her peers but also by a vote of local citizens. She loved to be involved in all facets of life in Nacogdoches by attending police academy classes, city commission meetings, helping to organize the Pecan Orchard Neighborhood Association, and volunteering for Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful projects. She was for many years a participant representing Nacogdoches at the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio, and she was a lifetime member of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America. She was an ardent traveler and traveled to 49 of our 50 states, seven Canadian provinces and Mexico and camped out in most of them. She was a children's Sunday school teacher, secretary to the administrative board, secretary to the board of trustees and the choir leader at Bonita United Methodist Church, until her illness caused her to resign. She was also an ardent baseball fan with the Atlanta Braves as "her" team. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, William D. "Bill" Clark; sons, Doug Clark and wife, Lynn, of Nacogdoches, Darryl Clark and wife, Shari, of Pueblo West, Colorado; grandchildren, Amber Clark of Ranger, Georgia, and Bill Clark of Cumming, Georgia; and one great-grandchild, William Michael Clark; sister Peggy McDaniel of Longview, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Inez Reid. She was a Methodist by faith and was comforted by her relationship with the Lord. Serving as pallbearers are Charles Pool, Eddie Pool, Jim Sevey, Dave Miller, Jim Jeffers, Greg Sowell and Stan Sisco. Honorary pallbearers are Don Clark, Bob Hill, R.B. Phillips, Don Corley, George Corley, John Hooper, Hall Nichols, Steve Dean, George Barham, Pete Baggett, John Crain, Mark Madden, Jackie Hilton, Larry Johnson, Steve McQueen and Jack Jumper. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m Monday, May 26, 2008, at the funeral home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Morgan of Bonita United Methodist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Bonita United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 632701, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963-2701 or Hospice of Deep East Texas, 907 Mound Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961 or Love, INC, P.O. Box 630423, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963. Bill and family,
I just learned of Shirley's illness and death last night. Rev. Gene Webb called and he had just heard about her death.
My sincere sympathy as know she was a jewel and did so much for Bonita and Nacogdoches. She is sincerely missed by all who knew her, but she is at peace and no longer suffering in God's care.
I am glad I got to know all of you while attending Bonita UMC.
