Patricia Martin Obituary

News Death Notice

MARTIN, Dr. Patricia A. Age 46 formerly of Miamisburg, died unexpectedly early Thanksgiving morning Nov. 27, 2008 at her home in Baton Rouge, LA. Patty was an exceptionally warm and loving person, always helping others and giving of herself. She was principal clarinet with the Baton Rouge Symphony since 1996 and also the assistant professor of woodwinds at Southern University in Baton Rouge where she also taught music theory. Patty had degrees from The Eastman School of Music, Michigan State University and Louisiana State University. She also attended the Manhattan School of Music as a Master's Orchestral Performance Major, studying with members of the New York Philharmonic. She was an active soloist and chamber musician who had performed extensively in the U.S., Europe and South America. Most recently she was a guest artist performing with Dr. di Cavalcanti and the world-renowned string quartet Quarteto De Cordes Cearenne in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and gave master classes at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil. Dr. Martin has performed with the Acadiana Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Ohio Chamber Players, Grand Teton Summer Festival Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Louisiana Sinfonietta, Natchez Opera, Loma Linda Symphony Orchestra, and was an alternate performer for the Colorado Festival Orchestra. She had held faculty positions at Southeastern Louisiana University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana State University and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. Dr. Martin made her Carnegie Hall solo debut at Weill Recital Hall in 1999. She had performed at International Clarinet Festivals, Vancouver British Columbia ClarinetFest, Michigan State University Contemporary Clarinet Festival, Cours International de Musique in Morges, Switzerland, Festival of a Thousand Oaks in Nebraska, the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium and the Montana/Idaho Clarinet Symposium. She has been a featured soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra (OH), Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and the Louisiana Sinfonietta. She was a member of the Baton Rouge Symphony Chamber Players and founding member of the Angelle Trio premiering new works for clarinet, viola and piano. Dr. Martin was initiated into the Kappa Kappa chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota in 2006. She was a member of the Miamisburg High School Class of 1980 and during her early high school years she attended Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan three consecutive years during which she was awarded the Intermediate Orchestra Medal at age 14. Patty's love of people, music and life was obvious to anyone who knew her. On many occasions she helped her students by providing financial aid, musical instruments and arranging graduate school scholarships for gifted students at Southern University. Some of her students soon began to affectionately call her "Mother Martin." Patty's constant battle with a light case of multiple sclerosis never prevented her from providing the best education for her students. Patty is survived by her parents Dr. Don and Sara Martin of Miamisburg, her brother Don Lloyd Martin of Kettering, her sister Cindy Martin Briggs, her nieces Melissa, Nicole and Michelle Briggs all of Lebanon, her uncle John Martin of Tennessee and numerous cousins. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday January 31, 2009 at Trinity United Church of Christ 203 East Linden Avenue, Miamisburg with Pastor Julie Olmsted officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until time of service followed by lunch at the church. My heart was broken to learn of Patty's death. As classmates, I always admired her beauty, spirit and talent. She was a tremendous asset to our class and to this world. I will always remember the sparkle and laughter in those brown eyes.

To the family and friends of Patti Martin:

It was quite a shock to read of Patti's death. I remember vividly our concert bands days as we prepared for the Virginia Beach national competition. Her warm smile and laugh made the stress of preparation more tolerable. My deepest condolences to the family and may her clarinet sing from the heavens.

It shocks and saddens me to hear of the early passing of Patty. I talked with her recently and was amazed at the wonderful spirit she possessed while dealing with multiple sclerosis. She spoke lovingly of her parents, brother, sister and nieces and how much they meant to her. Patty told me of the generous help she received from her coworkers and friends and it was clear that she was loved by them. She told me that she had a wonderful life, had accomplished all her goals and that the MS made her a better person. I am very happy that Patty was able to live her dreams and had such a full and productive life. She was a gifted, creative and dynamic person and I know that that she is greatly missed by many. I want to express my deepest sympathy to her family, her friends and her students.

Deeply saddened to read about Patty's passing over, much too early.
I went to high school with her, participating in concert and marching band. She was an amazing talent, a brilliant and dedicated musician. Always humble, always upbeat.
As I read the obit, I can tell she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. My most sincere condolences to her family and friends.
