News Death Notice

MORRIS, George F. Age 78, after a short illness peacefully crossed the Great Divide at Vero Beach, Florida on January 19, 2015. Born June 3, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio, George lived in Greenwich, Connecticut for 30 years and was employed by the Bowater Paper Company of Greenwich as a newsprint and coated paper salesman assigned to several states. He left Bowater as a Senior Vice President, in 1987, and joined the Fraser Newspaper Company of Canada as Vice President of their US sales operations. He finally retired from the position, in 1997, and relocated to Vero Beach. He briefly came out of retirement in early 2000 to become Secretary of the American Friends of the Game Conservancy, a prestigious organization committed to raising funds in America to support the UK Game Conservancy. George was an avid trout and Atlantic Salmon fly fisherman, an ardent hunter shooting quail and pheasant in the US and making several trips to the UK to shoot pheasant, partridge and above all the wily Red Grouse. He excelled at shooting Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. He held a private pilot's license and owned several light planes which he frequently flew throughout the US and Canada. He was a lifelong member of the Camp Fire Club of America (founded in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt and friends) serving in its Board of Directors. He was also a longtime member of the Atlantic Indians, attending their annual Spring and Fall meetings in the north. In Vero Beach, he belonged to the Indian River Trap & Skeet Club and was President of the local Vero Beach Quiet Birdmen (QB) organization. George will be especially remembered for his close friendships, humor, love of life and fun. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Day Morris; son, Renick (Jennifer) Morris of Mooresville, NC; stepchildren, John Gaston III of Raleigh, NC, Deven D. Gaston of Charlottesville, VA, Talbot F. Gaston of Raleigh, NC, G. Kemper Gaston of Raleigh, NC; sisters, Julia M. Jacekels of Arlington, TX and Melinda M. Tucker of Wakefield, MS; and three grandchildren, Gavin, Ayden and Brody Morris. A memorial service, for George, will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice House of Vero Beach. An online guestbook is available at www.lowtherfuneralhome.com.

I am deeply saddened to learn of George's passing and my sincere condolences to his family and close friends. Although I knew him only briefly from buying his Cessna 150 in 2011, he left a remarkable impression upon me. As Hemingway once stated, Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another. Clearly, George excelled in being distinguished and impacted countless people during his life's journey.

George, when I first heard of your condition from Renick I was sitting in a duck blind watching the sun rise. As I sat there for hours I thought of when I was young man at Campfire and all the times I turned to look in my dads direction and there you stood. It's never easy to say good bye, so I won't. You're a part of my young life and you will continue to be. I'm very sorry Renick and Cindy; I wish you both the best. And Renick, yes, I'd be delighted to make Campfire happen.

Dear Cindy, Our sympathy to you and your family. We are grateful for the afternoon we spent with you and George 3 years ago, it was just like old times. May the happy memories you shared cushion you as you face the months ahead. God bless you. Sara and Dale Arn

No one was like George. I knew him form the moment he entered the Gaston residence and what a ride that was. He considered each of those children his own and treated them with such kindness and love. And he treated me the same. I practically lived at their home growing up and I have such vivid memories of George sitting in the kitchen, drinking and smoking some fine cigar with a pink oxford shirt on and horn rimmed glasses. Smiling...always smiling.
George was a lovely soul who radiated humor and kindness. You will be missed.
