Mark STOERMER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 11, 2016.
STOERMER, Mark William 57, passed away in Seattle, Washington, December 3, 2016 following an extended illness. He was surrounded at home by friends and his family: wife Margaret (Beagen) Stoermer, son Nick, daughters Marina and Elizabeth Rose (Ellie) Stoermer, and sister Anne Stoermer Lizak, who survive him. Preceded in death by his parents Edward S. Stoermer and Dorothy Pax Stoermer, Mark is also survived by siblings Mary, Ed, Matt, and Anne (Lizak.). Mark graduated with a Master's degree in Ocean Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. A research scientist at the University of Washington he and his team worked for the School of Oceanography and other departments. John Delaney, Ph.D., Director of the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative Regional Scale Nodes program remembers Mark this way: "He was an amazingly innovative scientist, engineer, illustrator and educator who worked with many of us over the past 16 years, producing remarkable depictions of ocean and geological systems by blending real data with artistic perspectives that communicated the essence of what we strive to understand in the earth and ocean sciences. On top of it all, Mark was one of the gentlest and most creative human beings I have ever met." He will be remembered as a sweet, kind, and loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and son. No immediate public memorial service is planned; family and friends will be remembering him together over the course of the next year in Washington, Ohio, and Rhode Island. Contact the family for details.
