Carmen Bianco Obituary

Carmen A. Bianco

Carmen Anthony Bianco passed away on July 10, 2015 at Cokesbury Village at the age of 82.

He was born in Erie, PA to the late John A. and Pasqua C. Bianco. Carmen attended the Erie public schools; Irving Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High, and Strong Vincent High School. His positive experiences at these three schools led him into the teaching profession. He excelled in football and was named All-City and All-State. He earned a BS in Biology from Edinboro State University. He continued to play football in college being named All-State each year. In 1953, he was drafted in the Army and stationed in Germany. When he returned to Edinboro, he met his love of his life, Joan Novelli, and later married in 1956. Carmen continued his education, receiving an MS in biology at West Chester University and post graduate studies at many other institutions.

Carmen moved to Wilmington in 1959, and began teaching biology at Brandywine High School for 31 years. He was named Delaware's Biology Teacher of the Year in 1980. He began coaching football in 1959 as an assistant, under his dear friend, John Modica. Later, becoming the head coach in 1969, a position he held until 1978. One of his most satisfying accomplishments was coaching the Blue team to a win in the 1975 Blue-Gold All-Star game. Later, he became an assistant coach at Cheyney University and continued to coach at numerous high schools in the area. He concluded his final season of coaching at Brandywine High School in 2007. Thus, ending a 52 year coaching career. Carmen also enjoyed coaching girls' basketball at Brandywine with Dick Durbano. He left a lasting legacy on his former biology students and football players throughout the years, many who still kept in contact with him. He will be missed by all.

After his retirement from Brandywine, he enjoyed many hobbies such as playing golf, creating stained glass for all his grandchildren, woodworking, tending to his vegetable garden and keeping with Italian tradition, his fig tree. He was fortunate to see the world, traveling abroad with his wife and family, Anita and Gene Balducci, and longtime friend, Fr. Dan Gerres. Carmen was a devout Catholic and served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Saint Mary Magdalen for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Novelli Bianco, his three children, John S. Bianco (Kyle), of Landenberg, PA, Ann B. Wood (John) of Waldorf, MD, and Marguerite B. Annone (Michael), of Wilmington, and his grandchildren who were most dear to him, Kristine and Carolyn Bianco, Colleen (Alex) Barclay, Ron and Kathleen Wood, Michael and Maria Annone. He is also survived by an uncle, Mario Calvano of Erie, PA, and a cousin, David Calvano, also of Erie. He was predeceased by his brother, Dominic Bianco, and sister, Gilda Haefner.

I just learned that Coach Bianco passed away. I was fortunate to talk to him at our 50th class reunion dinner at the Brandywine Country Club June 2011.
Coaches Modica, Sanner, Bianco, and Zicarelli guided us to the Blue Hen Conference co championship in 1960--a memory I cherish to this day. He was a wonderful role model for my teammates and me. After I graduated, I enjoyed scouting future BHS opponents with Coach Bianco and my best friend Bob Ferrara.

Mr. Bianco was my Biology teacher during summer school in 1970 ( I think!). Our class was predominantly girls, and to this day I remember his "Oh, geez" expression as we all walked in! Frog dissection day was hilarious...I have told many people over the years about this amazing teacher, who was all bluster and a sweetheart underneath. I left Delaware in 1976, and didn't know he taught for so long. That means his life was a blessing to generations of students, and he will always be remembered with a smile.

It's official. The BULLDOGS lost their growl. From homeroom to home team Mr. Bianco was a legend. A warmth and twinkle in his eye as he held sentry duty with Dr. Castelli on the outside of the classroom during class changes, and a fire in his eye on the field. No wonder we did Punnet Squares??? on eye color! I hope they show endless tape of all the "good stuff" just for you!

Mr. Bianco was one of my favorite teachers at BHS. He was kind and always seemed interested in what was going on with his students. He was a very good teacher and 47 years later I still recall the fruit fly experiment. (Red eyes or white eyes). Such excellence in teaching is a gift. My prayers go out to the entire Bianco family as I know he will be greatly missed.

I have known Carmen and Joan only a few months since they moved into Cokesbury Village and already I feel like part of their family. He was always so friendly and always had a smile while we were attending parties and dinners together. I will miss him so much.
I want Joan to know that I am always here for her to have a shoulder to cry on, or for just someone to talk with, or later even to have a laugh or two.
My condolences to all the family.

Coach Bianco possessed that rare combination of humility of heart and a desire to motivate others. In the classroom and on the field he was always a selfless leader. I was blessed to have known Carmen and to have learned so much from him. May he rest in peace.

Carmen and I were more like brothers rather than uncle and nephew. I lived with him for a while in 1944, after his father passed away.

Then my sister Pasqua moved back to the homestead and Carmen finished growing up there. We lived under the same roof.

The last time I spent time with him was July 12, 2012, it was Joan's class reunion. We spent the entire afternoon together. It was a good afternoon.

Carmen was a good man. He got an education, got married, got a good job and he and Joan raised their three children. He enjoyed life and what he was doing.

Now it's his time to leave this place.
'bye Carm

My condolences to the Bianco family ~
I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Bianco's passing; he was my Biology teacher and a real gem. He could be blustery but was really just a big, sweet teddy bear. I remember his frequent response "aw, geez", when frustrated. It was always a treat to run into him years later at Super G grocery; he was always interested in his former students. Mr. Bianco was one of my favorite teachers - a dear and precious man. Now he and Mr. Modica can reminisce about their football years at Brandywine. Lisa McCave ('69 BHS), Indianapolis.
