Age 73, of Lewes, DE, passed peacefully on July 11, 2007, at the Lewes Convalescent Home surrounded by family and friends after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Bert was born on January 9, 1934. Bert owned and operated Ritter Farms, Inc with all his brothers and son. Bert enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren. Bert loved rabbit hunting with his dogs, farming and auto racing, owning race cars to include a coupe that he drove in his younger days. Bert was a honorary member of the Lewes Fire Department. Bert was also a 25 year member of the Improved Order of Redmen of Delaware and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #646 in Lewes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Ritter, of Lewes. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Steele, of Milford. Bert is survived by his wife of 24 years, Etta Wells Ritter; a son, Brad, of Lewes wife, Laura and their triplets Amanda, Adam, and Aaron; 3 step-sons, Robert McCabe, of Harbeson wife, Stephanie and 3 children, Willie, Justin, and Leslie, Ralph McCabe, of Millsboro wife, Ronda and their 4 children, Amber, Brian, Chase, and Kaitlyn, Randy McCabe, of Frankford and wife, Melinda and children, Allen and Natasha. He is also survived by 3 brothers, Frank, of Lewes and wife, Janet, Irvin, of Milford and wife, Eleanor and Howard "Bud," of Lewes and wife, Jacqui; 6 sisters, Marie Savin, of Milford, Ethel Lee, of Harbeson her husband, Keith, June Simpson, of Harbeson her husband, Danny, Joann Burton, of Lewes her husband John, Janice Mosley, of Seaford her husband, Jim, Pat Rust, of Seaford her husband, Larry. He is also survived by several special nephews and nieces, and a very large and loving extended family and special group of treasured friends.
A funeral service will be held Saturday July 14, at 1 pm, at the chapel of MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, 32013 Long Neck Rd, Millsboro, DE. 19966, were friends and family may call on Friday evening from 6-8 pm. Burial will be in St. George's Chapel Cemetery near Angola.
Bert enjoyed spending time at the annual Relay of Life with all of his friends so the family requests in lieu of flowers, please make all donations to the American Cancer Society, C/O Holly Lake Campgrounds, 32087 Holly Lake Rd, Millsboro, DE. 19966.
