Rathmell, John W.

Gates: Peacefully, Tuesday, December 25, 2012. Born in Williamsport, PA in 1926 and attended Williamsport H.S., where he was active in the marching band as a drummer. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served as a radio operator on a destroyer escort with the rank of Petty Officer in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Upon his discharge from the Navy he attended RIT studying typesetting, where he met Elsa; his beloved wife of 61 years. After graduation from RIT he was employed at several smaller area newspapers as a Linotype Operator and in the mid 50's was employed at the Democrat and Chronicle as Linotype Operator and then Typographer. He retired from the D&C in 1987. In 1964 he joined the Gates-Chili Fire Dept., where he dedicated 48 years of service. He was an active Fire Fighter for 36 years, served on the Board of Directors, the House Committee and was a 12 year Exempt Member. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1830. He also maintained a well equipped wood working shop, where he made furniture, cabinetry and in his later years, toys and minituare doll house furniture. He enjoyed big band music, jazz, civil war history, camping and was an avid golfer and threw darts in the GVDA until he was 80.

Predeceased by his wife, Elsa; sister, Della; nieces, Linda, Susan and Candice. Survived by sons, John Guy of Rochester, Gary of N.H.; daughters, Karen (Lance) Clark of St. Augustine, FL, Amy Gallipeau (Bill), grandchildren, John and Janelle Gallipeau all of Greece, NY; and his favorite cat, Rebel.

Friends may call at the Leo M. Bean and Sons Funeral Home, Sunday 12-2 PM with Service immediately following at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Gates Fire Dept., 2355 Chili Ave., 14624.
