Roy Carnahan Obituary

Carnahan, Roy Elden

York, PA: Roy Elden Carnahan of York, PA died on July 1, 2017 after a year of declining health.

Roy Carnahan was born on April 19, 1927 in Wadsworth, OH, the only child of Kent and Bertha Carnahan. He was educated at Kent State University Elementary School, De Puyster Junior High School, and Theodore Roosevelt High School, all in Kent, OH.

In 1944 he entered Eastern Nazarene College where he met Doris Jackson, of Rochester, NY. They were married after graduation in 1948, and moved to Kansas City, MO, where Roy attended the Nazarene Theological Seminary, graduating in 1951 with a Master's Degree in Religion. The couple accepted an assignment in Potsdam, NY, where there was a church building but no congregation.

After a successful pastorate in Potsdam, the couple moved to Rochester, NY, and began another new congregation there, Rochester Calvary Church of the Nazarene. In 1966, the couple and their family accepted an assignment at First Church of the Nazarene in Baltimore, MD.

In 1969, Dr. Carnahan was elected Superintendent of the Washington District of the Church of the Nazarene, and served in that position until retirement from the full-time ministry in 1992. During those years he served on the Board of Trustees of Eastern Nazarene College and rose to become Chairman. He was awarded a D. Min. degree by the College.

In retirement Dr. Carnahan served on the staff of Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene in York, ministering to shut-ins and elderly church members.

Dr. Carnahan is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Jackson Carnahan, and four children, Elden Carnahan of Laurel, MD, Stephen Carnahan of Auburn, ME, Geren Carnahan of Hampton, VA, and Sherrill Mohnkern of Peterburg, PA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wed., July 5, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene, 400 Stillmeadow Lane, York, PA 17404.

What a wonderful man of God. I know he will be missed by many. He was the Pastor at Baltimore 1st church of the Nazarene. My grandmother and aunt, Mary Cavey and Delores Cavey went to the church for many years. They thought of him very fondly. When my grandmother passed away in 1994, he did her funeral.
I have may memory's of Dr. Carnahan at church camp. He was truly a wonderful Pastor. May he rest in peace.

My mother remembers how kind he was to my grandmother when my grandfather, Rev. James Boggs, passed away unexpectedly in the fall of 1970. And he always remembered my husband, since he was from Rochester, NY, and a nephew to Rev. Morris Wilson from Rochester Trinity Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Carnahan will be missed by our family.
