Dallas Hanks Obituary

May 11, 1963 ~ June 25, 2014
Burley, Idaho-Dallas A. Hanks, known to family and local friends as "Dewi," died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, after a four year battle with bladder cancer.
Dallas was born May 11, 1963, and grew up on the family farm west of Burley. He graduated from Burley High School and served an LDS Mission to England. He then graduated from Brigham Young University and taught Biology at Utah Valley State College (now UVU). He received a Master's of Science degree in 1991 and a PhD in 2010 from Utah State University.
Dallas was the founder of USU's Center for Agronomic and Woody Biofuels where he shared his innovative biofuels project ideas by using untillable land to grow biofuel feedstock plants. Dallas carried on his scientific ingenuity by trying new cancer treatments and continuing to fight to the very end.
He is survived by his parents, Phil and Buelah Hanks of Burley, Idaho; one sister, DeEtte (George) Shaw of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Scott (Debi) Hanks of Pleasant Grove, Utah; and his nieces and nephews who dearly loved him.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Kay Hanks, and Douglas Lee Hanks; and a stillborn sister.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Star LDS Church, 100 S. 200 W., of Burley, with Bishop Chris Seibold officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, June 27, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.

I just read about Dallas' death in BYU Today. Dallas and I attended BYU Agronomy Department together and then roomed with each other the summer of 1987 in Huntington, UT farming for Utah Power and Light. He was a fun roommate; we had a lot of fun in the evenings during our time-off. I pass my condolences to his family.

I worked with Dallas as he tried to convince the Tooele Army Depot to plant biofuel on some of its underutilized land. He was tenacious in his beliefs and a truly wonderful human being. I am sorry I did not know of his passing sooner. I am also sorry that I will not be able to work with him in the future. May he rest in peace.

Dear Scott and Family,

Know that you are in our thoughts in this time of sorrow. I only heard great things about Dallas and his intellect. I know he struggled greatly in his fight against cancer. Know that he is in a better place after such a long fight.

I will always remember the excitement and nervousness of my first "school dance" in Jr High----Dallas was the first person to ever ask me for a dance. I ran into him at my husbands workplace after he had told us all he was doing so well---he told me his cancer had returned and I think he just didn't want to tell everyone, after he head been doing so well. He was always a cheerful person a a big tease.

I remember Dallas and his good heart fondly. He never gave up. No one ever wants cancer, but it often brings out the best in people, truly demonstrating their strength and courage. Dallas was a solid example of unwavering courage.

I had the opportunity to visit with Dallas as his Bishop give him a Priesthood Blessing. I had a profound respect for his strength.
