Stephen Barlow Obituary

1942 ~ 2013
Stephen Welti Barlow finished the final chapter of his mortal experience July 26, 2013. Though we hoped there would be more chapters, we realize the quality of his existence exceeded the quantity of his time. Steve's life was written in spectacular color, from his discovery of hot rods as a teenager in Bountiful to his century bike rides as a "senior citizen". His beautiful blonde hair and his welcoming smile never dimmed. Steve never got tired of looking at or talking about the speed and style of automobiles. He tried to own as many makes and models of cars as was modestly possible. He enjoyed biographies, traveling, biking, boating, motorcycles, skiing and sunset rides on Lake Powell.
Much of Steve's life story was written with his best friend and eternal companion, Marcy Ence Barlow. Their journey together began in 1967 just before Steve received a B.S. at Weber State University and an MBA at the University of Utah. He was an honorable, devoted husband, a beloved father and a playful, active grandpa.
Though he had a love for history and biology, he had a remarkable head for business. As an adviser with Northwestern Mutual, he was a leader; he received accolades and awards in his industry including being a lifetime member of the MDRT. Steve was known for his fair treatment of colleagues and clients and he valued taking part in the various organizations of his profession.
Steve loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and he lived rather than preached his testimony. The pages of his life are full of acts of service. He served missions to New Zealand and the Salt Lake City Inner City and he held many church positions. He was a valued support to several community charities and predictably stopped to offer assistance to those stranded on the highway. He treated all people with the same respect and dignity.
Steve was an exceptional father and much of his time and resources were spent on his seven children. His children thank him for his good name and for the life lessons he taught by example: respect others, serve unconditionally, face challenges with courage, be generous, take pride in ownership, be friendly to everyone, work before you play and don't spend more than you earn!! Dad, as your family, we assure you that your generous heart, your integrity and your desire to serve will continue through us.
Steve is preceded in death by his father LaMar L. Barlow.
He is survived by his wife Marcy, his mother Thelma Welti Barlow, his children Brett (Mariah Pallo), Brooke (Jeffrey) Lewis, Jeremy (Lisa Condie), Liza (Tom) Telford, Emily (Jake) Redd, Jake (Jamie Hawkins), Julianna (Christian) Barney, and his twenty grandchildren, his brothers Walt (Claudette), Bruce (Emily), Philip (Debe) Allen (Cheri), John and sisters Kathryn (Gary) Helgesen and Marianne (Mike Lopez) and loving inlaws from the Condie, Ence and Johnsen families and many treasured nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may greet the family at the Somerset Chapel, 1885 Summerwood Drive, Farmington, UT on Tuesday, July 30, 6-8 p.m. Services will be held at the LDS Stake Center on 729 Shepard Lane, Farmington, UT on Wednesday, July 31 at 11 a.m. Family and friends may greet the family on Wednesday, July 31 from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Interment at the Farmington Cemetery.
Services entrusted to Lindquist Kaysville Mortuary, 400 North Main Street.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Church Perpetual Education Fund.

Stephen was a fine individual. We pursued the same business and very seldom crossed paths except for luncheons a the Hotel Utah. He is an example for all to follow. Goodbye dear friend. Robert Dodge

I just wanted to express my deepest sympathies to your family. I just heard about Steve's passing last night at the temple. My husband and I worked with him there and adored him. I called him Robert Redford for a time. I thought he looked like Mr Redford. From that we developed a friendship. What a great man. I will truly miss him.

Marcy, you probably don't remember me but you and I were such good friends when you worked in the Clerk's Office and I worked for the District Attorney's Office all those years ago. You were just a doll and I've never forgotten you or our friendship. I was so sorry to see that your Steve had passed away at such a young age. Now that I am older, I think 70 is quite young. Please know that I am thinking of you at this time. Feel a hug old friend, Cindy

I was so touched reading about the passing of my colleague of several decades ago. I have wonderful memories and intense admiration for the many wonderful qualities and character of Steve. I will always be grateful for his example, kindness, and influence on a young insurance agent who had the privilege of sharing his workspace for 5 years. Love to Marcy and the family.

Steve always smiling and so great at making people feel special when he entered the room and greeted them. Steve's spirit and joy radiated from his smile. He was wonderful dad, as he raised such kind, generous and friendly kids. I have so many memories growing up as a friend at the Barlow house and the spirit there was strong, as Steve was obviously a humble patriarch of his family. Thoughts and prayers to your whole family!

Marcy,
You two were the first people we had the pleasure of meeting when we moved into your circle. You were traveling in your motorhome, excited about your recent trip and glowed with unity. Matt was thrilled to have someone around who loved to talk shop. We have mentioned several times that we hope to be a couple like you... fabulous friends, active, kind, always laughing, generous and an example of sincere sweet love. We greatly admire you both and are the lucky ones to live nearby. Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to your family. Steve will be so missed.

It breaks my heart to know that happy smile is no longer here for us to enjoy. Steve was a wonderful man. The only comfort I get is that he and Rob are now rejoicing their new spiritual freedom from earthly bodies. Rob loved his Barlow cousins and their annual Thanksgivings together as young boys and their adventures together. Much love to your family.

He will be remembered for his friendships and the legacies he created through his great care, his patience, his love and planning. He mentored so many, lifted up others, encouraged and inspired. May you find comfort in knowing Steve lives on in so many ways.

The Barlow Family,
Steve is one of the finest people I have know in this big world. I have been blessed with the friendship of many fine people and feel it a privilege to have known Steve.
Steve conducted the operation of his insurance business in an unquestionable manner.
I visited with Steve on a few occasions in the past year and learned of his appreciation for fine things like his Mercedes sports car. However, his interests will turn to more heavenly things as he dwells in the hereafter with the best of spirits that have inhabited this earth.
My best wishes to his family whom will have only the best of memories of this great human.
May his family be blessed with the best of health, happiness and prosperity.

Uncle Steve was always very kind and generous to me growing up. I have so many memories of him at the steering wheel of his boat on family vacations when he would patiently give tips on water skiing! He and Marcy opened up their home in St. George to our little family and always made us feel so welcome to stay there. I loved sleeping over at their home growing up and being around the loving family they created together. He will be missed.

Dear Marcy, I remember your sweet family from the 21st Ward. Your sweetheart was the best kind of Bishop to all he served. I know how much the young teens thought of him and how his spirit helped them. Donald Dean, my son and his friends had many conversations of the help and understanding he gave to them. He will be missed, but rest assured, he will always be close by. Wishing you many blessings thru your life to come for

Dear Barlow Family,
My experiences with Bishop Barlow and Sister Barlow were during my college years. I remember visiting their home and admiring their chiming clocks. They were such an example to the young people of the 21st Ward. Their love for each other was amazing to watch. They lived their love, which was a powerful lesson for me during those formative years in my life. A smile was ever on his face. He influenced many in his life.

We will miss Steve very, very much. Our warmest thoughts are with all of his family members.
