BERT LACEY Obituary

Bert N. Lacey 1921 ~ 2010 Bert Nelson Lacey, 89, passed away peacefully November 30, 2010. Bert was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was born May 5, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Emma Elizabeth Kurr and Newton Lacey in Salt Lake City, Utah. Bert played the violin in the high school orchestra and couldn't help but notice a certain Dorothy Mae Nielsen who also played the violin in the orchestra. They were married at age 19 in the Salt Lake Temple. After high school graduation, Bert went to work at Cudahy Meat Packing Company in North Salt Lake and worked as a Traffic Manager. These skills were put to good use during his military service in World War II coordinating movement of men and supplies in the motor pool. He was stationed in the South Pacific and spent time in Japan and the Philippines. Four children came to their home: daughters: JoAnne (Michael) McNulty, (who passed away six years ago due to complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis), Lynnette (Richard) Edgley, Denise (Bruce) Strassburg and son, Bret (Carla) Lacey. Bert returned to Cudahy after his military service and worked as a Purchasing Agent and was transferred to Mesa, AZ in 1963. His wife said she would only move to Arizona on one condition - that a swimming pool be added to the backyard, and indeed it was. He and family members enjoyed many hours of cool and refreshing recreation (and relief from the Arizona heat) in the backyard pool. Golfing was a favorite activity enjoyed with family members whenever the opportunity presented itself. He enjoyed golf so much that weather conditions were of little concern, playing in sun, heat, rain and snow! He was playing golf once a week into his 88th year. As a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bert served others in many capacities including the Scouting Program, as a Seventy and ward missionary, as a Stake Clerk for 15 years, as Counselor in the Bishopric and in High Priest quorum leadership. He also served two full-time missions with his first wife, one to the South Pacific paradise of Samoa and the second in the frozen tundra of Winnipeg, Canada. After retirement, Bert helped the family build a log cabin in Star Valley, Wyoming and enjoyed many memorable family outings there. After his first wife passed away, Bert married again at the age of 74. He and Dorothy Stover Lacey have been together for the past 15 years and they enjoyed working in the yard, gardening, traveling to historic places and spending time with children and grandchildren. Bert is survived by wife, Dorothy; children: Lynnette Edgley, Denise Strassburg and Bret Lacey; grandchildren: Marti Herbst, Shelly Bigler, Todd McNulty, Kelly McNulty, Chris Hymus, Colleen Edgley, Curtis Edgley, Claire Simpson, Joel Strassburg, Beth Scott, Alec Strassburg; and 17 great-grand-children. Bert also cherished relationships with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren from his second marriage. Bert's family thanks those at Legacy House, Aspen Ridge West and Inspiration Hospice who provided loving care during the last months of his life. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010, 12:00 noon at the Taylorsville 3rd Ward, 1457 West Atherton Drive (4375 So.) where a viewing will be held Saturday, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Interment. Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.

Sister Lacey, We were sadded to hear about Bert's passing. We felt it an Honor to serve him while he was at Aspen Ridge West and that we were there every week to make sure that he was able to partake of the Sacrament. My husband and I enjoyed our conversations with him. What a great man he was. Sincerely, The Riverside 6th Branch Aspen Ridge West.

Great Uncle Bert was very generous in sharing family history with me. He was my grandma Ethel Lacey Orth's 1/2 brother. I appreciate him.

Dear Dorothy, We want to express our love and affection for Bert and you and for the many years you have spent together. We always enjoyed being at your home and talking with you and Bert. Bert was always friendly and made us feel at home when we dropped by. We are so sorry for his passing and want you to know of our love for you. You have been a wonderful wife to Bert and we know from observing you and Bert together that there was a mutual respect and love for each other. The last time we went to dinner with you and Bert at the Cheese Cake Factory we recognized that Bert's health was failing and that he would not be with us for too much longer. Our thoughts about him will always be of a cheerful, thoughtful man who always made you feel at home. Our love goes to you at this time. We love you. Allen & LuJean

I'm sorry to hear about Bert. I knew it was coming, but my feelings are the same. What a wonderful man. I am happy that I got to work with him in the High Priest Group for a number of years. He never had a bad thing to say about anybody and he was always willing to go meet people he didn't know. Never took anybodies word about someone until he checked it out himself. He would say to me, "Merv, do you know this person?" I would tell him what I knew and then he would say, Well, let's go see him or her." Off we would go. Very dedicated to his family, friends, neighbors and church duties. I for one will miss him and his cheery disposition. Happy trails my friend, until we meet again. My dearest wishes go to his wife Dorothy and his whole family. God bless you.
