GUNVOR HAUGEN Obituary

Gunvor Rebekka Jorgensen Haugen 1930 ~ 2011 Our beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed with grace and dignity from this life on August 11, 2011 surrounded by her adoring family.Gunvor was born on January 30, 1930 to Birger Mikal Jorgensen and Rebekka Oliva Solberg in Bergen, Norway. Gunvor was an adventurous girl who explored the mountains of Norway, swam the icy fjords, and developed a reverence and love for all living things. Her life and country were ravaged by World War II as she and her country were held in the throngs of destruction for many years. At a young age she experienced tragedy and heart ache, including the untimely loss of her father; his ship being torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean. Her spirit endured unbroken. She bravely immigrated to the United States of America with her mother and was always proud to be a citizen of "the greatest country on earth." She left everything including the boy she loved to live and give back to the country that saved her life. Miraculously, she was reunited with her young love as he too immigrated to "the country of hero's." Their timeless love story is the best novel yet to be written as they enjoyed 61 years of unconditional love in marriage. They were married September 23, 1950 and later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Their union brought forth five children, but their home was always full of more. Gunvor had an open door policy; everyone was always welcome and always fed. She raised our Navajo sister, Landie for nine years and loved her as one of her own. Gunvor was much loved in her neighborhood and community. Her many acts of charity and service was a pivotal component to the running of any area in which she lived. She was always willing to serve in her church and held many callings. Her favorite was serving as a teacher. She had an incredible knowledge and deep testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ which she willingly shared. Her service extended to returning to Norway where she served with her husband as a mission president. She loved her missionaries as her own and touched many lives. Gunvor was a classic, breathtaking beauty. Her laugh was contagious and inclusive. She included and easily loved everyone. She always stood strong for the underdog. She loved a great, spirited debate, and she loved to win. She was articulate, intelligent, well informed and had a gentle listening ear. We deeply love our mom and Mormor. Our hearts are broken as we say good-bye for now. We are sure that she is talking (non-stop), laughing, singing, back flipping, and if possible skiing. Gunvor is survived by her husband Per, and their children Harold, the favorite child, (Becky Jo) Haugen, Becky, the favorite child, (Jim) Allred, Kari, the favorite child, (Brian) Nielson, and Heidi, the real favorite child (Todd) Templeton. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grand children. Gunvor was preceded in death by her parents, her only sibling Bibi Aune, and another favorite child, Perry. Funeral services will be held Monday August 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lone Hollow Ward Building 2195 East Pepperwood Drive (west gate). A viewing will be held Sunday August 14, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah, and on Monday August 15, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. prior to the formal service. Online condolences: www.larkincares.com We would like to thank our dad for showing us what true love really looks like. We have watched him take care of our mom with such loving tenderness and patience for more than eight years, after suffering the debilitating effects of several strokes and stroke related Alzheimer's disease. We extend a heartfelt thank you to her many friends and neighbors. Your endless acts of service and love have not gone unnoticed. It is a rare gift for a family to be supported for so many years. We would also like to thank the staff at the Alta Ridge Alzheimer's Community and Millcreek Hospice for their special care and treatment of our mother for the last three months. Special thanks to her nurse Lisa for her love, concern, and consideration for us all.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Sister Haugen. It was such a joy working with the Haugens in Norway. They were so warm and supportive in every way. I was sorry to hear that Sister Haugen was having so many health problems and hope she is at peace at last. Best wishes to her family at this time of sorrow. Sister Haugen's kindness and humor will always remain as a fond memory.

President Haugen and family,
Please accept my most sincere condolences on the passing of sister Haugen. President and sister Haugen have been, and always will be great examples and some of the most beloved people in my life. I cherish the time that I was blessed to serve with the Haugens and I still look to them as great mentors and dear friends. Sister Haugen was always the perfect, loving "mission mom", and as such could love you and correct you at the same time, but all you felt was the love. I will miss her beautiful smile and infectious laugh. President, I know the Lord will bless and comfort you as you await a glorious reunion with your wonderful wife. I hope you know how many lives both of you touched and blessed; I being one of the most blessed by your love and example.

Dear President Haugen and Family,
I have a clear memory of a zone conference in which Sister Haugen taught us about living joyfully. I think the reason that talk has stayed with me is because Sister Haugen was the embodiment of what she taught. As I reflect on your service in the Norway Mission, I believe there were missionaries who completed their service honorably and went on to live happy, faithful lives, largely because of the love they felt from you and Sister Haugen. I will ever be grateful for the sacrifices you made to serve, and your influence will continue to guide and strengthen me.
May God bless you and your family.

President Haugen and Family,
Sister Haugen said once that she felt a closeness to my own mother, and she was, in so many ways similar to my mother. She too has passed, and now I truly feel motherless. Sister Haugen had the patience and love--real unconditional love--for all her missionaries. She taught me about real faith and prayer. She will be missed. I can still hear her wonderful and distinct laugh; and her, "Oh, Elder Naylor," with a tone of slight correction, smothered in love. May the Spirit comfort you as you realize her mission continues to bless so many. All my love to your family.

Gunvor and Per started a series of events that had a profound impact on my life.
In 1993, my parents planned a trip to Sweden to pick up my brother from his LDS mission. One Sunday, they excitedly told Haugen’s of their plans. Gunvor and Per asked, “Why would you go so far and not visit the most beautiful country in the world?” Long story short, they ended up in Norway in the house of my brother’s former missionary companion. Later I met that companion’s sister, and we’ve been married now for 17 years.
People are placed in our lives and we often don’t appreciate the role they are intended to play. I am forever grateful for the role Gunvor and Per played in my life. God speed, Gunvor. We love you.

Dear Pres. Haugen and Family,
I just received word of Sister Haugen's passing. What a wonderful woman she was! Her example of caring and unconditional love for us missionaries is a legacy that many of us are trying to emulate in our own lives. Her wit, smile, contagious laugh, testimony of the Savior and love of family were evident to all who were privileged to know and associate with her. Although she will be greatly missed, what a reunion must have taken place on the other side as she returned home. May you all know of the prayers being offered in your behalf, and the tender mercies of a loving Heavenly Father as he softens the feelings of loneliness.
Love,
Jill Moss

My heart is full of love and gratitude for President and Sister Haugen. What an energetic, sensitive, and loving woman Sister Haugen is. It meant the world to me to get to serve in the mission home with them both. President Haugen, may the Lord put his arms around you and hold you up. The influence you and Sister Haugen had on me is tremendous and lasting. I love you both. -Richard Ribble, Norway Oslo Mission 1977-79

Our thoughts have been with the Haugen family. Through the past dozen years or so we have seen Brother and Sister Haugen at various family events. A memory that will stay in our hearts is this past spring when Becky was speaking in our ward Sacrament Meeting. Gunvor and Per came to hear her speak. As a witness after the meeting, we watched Sister Haugen embrace her daughter, her eyes speaking volumes about love, praise and happiness. Such a tender moment. Jeff and Rebecca Lyon

Dear Haugens,

We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to Per and the Family.
We have been privilege to know Gunvor over the years with time together at 17th of May celebrations, social gathering, and a memorable trip to the cabin in Star Valley. Gunvor personified the true characteristics of a “Bergenserine” – quick, witty, and gracious.

We will miss her.

My earlliest memories of Gunvor is in Bergen Norway during WW2, where she lived on the same street as we did. I remember her as she came running down the street, tears running down her face, her beautiful hair flowing all over, she was crying, she had just found out her Father had been killed on a ship that was torpedoed by the Germans. She was best friends with my sister Gerd and they remained best friends to this day and will be forever. Gunvor was vivacious, beautiful, full of life and love. She considered herself as a fifth daughter to our parents Knut and Inger Weiberg, they loved her as their own. Gunvor brought the Gospel of Jesus Christ to me through Gerd, and on to the rest of our family. Our whole family came to SLC in 1951,and enjoyed the love and company of Gunvor and her family for these many years. last summer I came back to SLC and was able to visit Gunvor and Per in their lovely home, the pictures we took of us all together will be priceless to me forever. Though I now live in Norway again, I will mourn her passing, but thank her for the example she has been to me, and the wonderful friend she always was to Gerd. My thoughts and prayers are with Per and all of her children/grand and great grands. I am so grateful for knowing we will all be together again, and stay forever friends and families. Gunvor you are the Grand Lady, beautiful, laughing, talking, always knowing 'how to love person' in our lives. thank you for your goodness. Else Weiberg Sælen

My thoughts are with the Haugen family this weekend, along with thoughts and memories of Tante Gunvor. Her qualities are easy to identify within her children that I've always called cousin. Qualities such as grace, class, open mind's and warm inviting hearts. Tante Gunvor always made me feel welcome, she made the world a better place. The bond she shared with my mother Gerd will always hold a special place in my heart. I shall also never forget the look on the faces of these two beautiful ladies, as a young boy learning to swim, they promised me that I would not sink in the deep end of the pool. I jumped in and did float, right to the bottom and sat there until someone fished me out. I remember no fear of sinking but shall never forget the look of shock and worry on their faces. I did learn to swim in that pool in Granger, I've many wonderful memories of that Haugen home. Thank you Tante Gunvor for showing love, for teaching a young boy and for being an example of what a beautiful human should be.

Reading of Gunvor's death reminded me of her much loved mother, Rebekka. I remember Rebekka taking me through the home in West Valley that Gunvor had created for her. Rebekka was delighted and thrilled with every detail of her new home. Rebekka didn't tell Gunvor how much she loved the home. Gunvor had to hear that from Rebekka's friends. Gunvor was so generous with others.
Sincere condolences are extended to her family. It wasn't until I read the obituary that I was aware that Kari Nielson is her daughter. May God bless all of you with peace and love.
