JOHN COPIER Obituary

John Dirk Copier 1953 ~ 2011 John Dirk Copier returned to his Heavenly Father on June 26, 2011, after a hard fought battle with kidney cancer. He was born July 25, 1953 to Floris and Eva Antje Aaltje Anjewierden Copier in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from Granite High School then served an honorable mission to the country of his parents' birth, the Netherlands. After returning, he married his sweetheart, Sheri Lynn Atkinson, in the Salt Lake Temple on a Friday the 13th. Luckily they remained married 35 years. John grew up working in the construction industry next to his father and other family members. He later honed his own skills as a brick mason and foreman, leaving behind many monuments to his talent, including the City Creek Project, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, and the new Mid-Jordan TRAX stations. He loved the Lord and served diligently in the LDS church in many capacities, including several years serving with the young men. He particularly enjoyed his experiences with the youth on pioneer treks and scout camps. He also loved sports, especially football, softball, golfing, hunting and camping with his boys, and motorcycles. He won many motocross trophies racing in his youth and several medals playing golf with his special buddies in the Special Olympics. However, his greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Sheri; children: Erin Rigby, J.D., Ryan (Heidi), Nathan, Camren, Kaden, Derrick Rigby; grandchildren: Alyssa, D.J., Nicole; parents: Floris and Eva; brothers: Floris (Joanne), Randall (Kaye), Mike, Eldon (Debbie), Ken (Char), Dale (LaDean); and sisters: Marian (Mike) Mallory, Linda (Lee) Llewellyn, Sharon (Cameron) Clukey. He was preceded in death by his grand-parents and son, Jordan. The family wishes to thank Bryan Allen and the Allen Masonry employees for their love, support, and generosity. Funeral services will be held Wednesday July 6, 2011 at the LDS River 6th Ward building (7350 S. 1300 W., West Jordan) at 12 p.m. Friends may call Tuesday July 5, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Estates (6500 S. Redwood Rd., West Jordan) and one hour prior to the services at the church. Online condolences welcomed at www.memorialutah.com In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kaden's future missionary fund at any Jordan Credit Union or to Parent-to-Parent at the University Hospital NICU.

Sheri,

I had no idea until today that you lost your sweet John. My heart goes out to you in sympathy. Though I was never able to meet John personally, I know from the stories you told and the online obituary that you are married to a wonderful man. I use the present tense, 'ARE married', for a reason. Thanks to the blessings of the gospel, family relations needn't be terminated. God bless you and your family at this time.

Aunt Sheri,
I'm sorry I was unable to make it back to Utah for the funeral. I will miss Uncle John tremendously. I am so glad we were able to spend time with your family during your trips to California. I've missed attending the BYU games with my dad and Uncle John over the last few years.
One of my favorite memories of John was the horse-packing trip he took with Travis, my dad, and I. I still look at the pictures often and remember how much fun we had.
Kristi and I love you all and remember your family in our prayers.

My children and I are honored to have known John as he stayed with us a year in California, working with his brother and father. He was a bright spot in our days. A cheerful, kind and sincere uncle and friend. May God bless John's wife and children during their separation. Until they meet again! And may God bless you all with peace and hope and joy until then.
