Catherine C. Funaro

Des Moines

Catherine C. Funaro, died peacefully May 4th, 2016, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Catherine was born on August 25th, 1930 in Des Moines to Vincenzo and Terisina Ruggiero.  She was a proud graduate of St. Josephs Academy and was the manager of the Equitable of Iowa Credit Union where she served the credit union members for almost 40 years.   Catherine was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.   Her joy was her commitment to family, she was a wife to her loving husband George for 65 years and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and aunt.  Her greatest achievement was her legacy of faith to her family and all of those who knew her.

Catherine is survived by her daughter, Rose Marie and son-in-law Michael, grandsons Michael, Nicholas and Anthony, (Kim) Vasquez; great grandson Michael Joseph Vasquez III; sister, Mary Rose Cardamone and sister-in-law Anna Marie Ruggiero and Rachel Stasi, as well as her many nieces and nephews that she dearly loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Giacinto "George" Funaro; brother and sister-in-law Fred (Lois) Ruggiero; brother Joseph Ruggiero and sister, Joanne Serra.

Visitation will be Monday, May 9, 2016 at 12:00p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 1:00p.m.  Burial will be immediately after at Glendale Cemetery.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank her care team at Unity Point Hospice as well as her supportive family that made it possible to care for her at home.

Rose Marie & Family,
Your mom as well as your dad meant a lot to my parents, so much that they were my godparents...cherished memories for me. Loved them both and I send my sincere sympathy to you and your family. Losing a parent is never easy...may warm memories comfort you. Liz (Tucci) & John Calisesi

To the family of Kay: My association with Kay goes back nearly 35 years. I always appreciated her kindness and loyalty. She had a way of making those around her feel special and important. She was a sharp and dedicated business woman back in the days when there were few women in that business - and she was very successful. I enjoyed working with her through the years and will remember her fondly. My deepest sympathy to those close to her.
