Dr. Dan G. Guyer

Huntington Woods, MI - Dr. Dan G. Guyer, 74, of Huntington Woods, Mich., died on May 1, 2021.

Dr. Guyer was the son of the late Edith and the late Abram Guyer. Dr. Guyer was raised in Detroit, attended Mumford High School, and graduated from Wayne State University Medical School in 1971.

As a psychiatrist, he served in private practice in Grosse Pointe, Mich., and previously served as chief of psychiatry at Henry Ford Cottage Hospital. He was a beloved teacher through the hospital and the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He was an expert and clinical educator in electroconvulsive therapy, and was devoted to his residents in the program.

Dr. Guyer was a leader in many agencies and programs of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. He served as a member of local and national boards, including the Jewish Federations of North America. He was a lay leader of Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills, Mich.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Cheryl Guyer and his children Sara Guyer (Scott Straus), Erica Guyer (Daniel Franklin), and Jonathan Guyer; and six grandchildren Sadie Straus, Solomon Straus, Anna Franklin, Jacob Franklin, Samuel Franklin, and Aerin Franklin. He is also survived by sister Annie (Judge Benjamin) Friedman, sister-in-law Elise (Dr. Marty) Levinson, and brother-in-law Neil Chapin (Diana Staneva). His brother Dr. Martin (Sheila) Guyer passed away in 2009. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, colleagues and a world of friends.

Dr. Guyer received the Detroit Jewish Federation William Davidson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. At the award ceremony held last fall, Dr. Guyer said, "I look at our community and its leadership, and as I look at my children and grandchildren, the future seems to be in good hands. May our community go from strength to strength." Private graveside services were held at Adat Shalom Memorial Park Cemetery. God Bless His Family
Dr Guyer was the only psychiatrist that helped me. I saw him for 15 years. Without him I would not have been able to keep my job and family.
Rest In Peace, Doctor

Dr. Guyer was my psychiatrist since 2017. My illness became apparent to me in ‘05 when I could no longer get out of bed to care for my family and be useful at work. I left work at age 58. I saw 5 other doctors without receiving much needed care. I attended Dr. Guyer’s outpatient, 3-week group therapy program in late ‘17. He began helping me during my 1st week. I became his patient immediately. 1.5 year’s ago he successfully performed ECT on me. Thanks to Dr. Guyer I am reaping the benefits of his knowledge and care. His family must be very proud of the man he was. I will always remember him and his kind and gentle manner. Thank you, doctor. May you RIP.

My deepest sympathy for the family of Dr
Guyer. Doctor Guyer was my psychiatrist for about 25 years
He knew how to listen. He knew when to be stern and when to be gentle with his tone. I once joked that i thought of him as a surrogate father figure. He will be deeply missed

Speechless!! I just found out today at the pharmacy. I loved him as my doctor. He helped me for 11 Years and was the ONLY DOCTOR that really cared enough to remember everything about me without looking through my chart. He always asked about my kids, he worked with me to get past the lost of my husband, DBT, through combat ptsd, suicide attempts, etc... I didn't even get a chance to tell him that My daughter graduates from Stanford University in June, with honors in Chemicalengineering. ..he was pulling for her. I was going to tell him during my appointment next week. I'm lost and Speechless at this moment...but I can see him walking into the office with a smile...knowing he was walking in to my issues and NEVER FROWNED OR IGNORED ME. So I'll try to be strong and do what I think he'd tell me...live and find joy in a life worth living.

Dr. Guyer was & still is the greatest Dr. I've ever known. He began managing my health in 2013 after I left active duty military, if not for his treatment I'm certain I wouldn't be alive today. He genuinely cared about my health.
I'm totally Shocked & devastated. The world now has a voided space that can be filled.

We must pray for his family without ceasing.

He the the best doctor to work for. I was blessed to have worked with him for the past 6 years and to share some of my big life events with him. He was very grateful and appreciative of his staff. He’d always give us a hard time if we left without saying good night. I miss him dearly.
