James Lee "Jamie" Wellman obituary, 1969-2017, Fort Worth, TX

James Wellman Obituary

James Lee Wellman unexpectedly left his family and friends to live in his eternal home with Jesus Thursday evening, Jan. 5, 2017. Mr. Wellman was 47. Memorial service: 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the sanctuary of University Christian Church, 2720 S. University Drive. Following the service, family and friends will gather in the church's Fellowhsip Hall. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the First Tee of Fort Worth, in his memory, is suggested. Born June 24, 1969, Jamie was raised by his loving parents, Bob and Carole Wellman of Kenova, W.Va. He graduated from Buffalo High School where he loved playing basketball and still remained in contact with many of his hometown friends. After graduating from West Virginia State College with a degree in safety and health education, he earned a master's degree from Texas Christian University in education administration. Jamie began his career as a basketball coach in West Virginia and was honored to coach basketball and volleyball at St. Joseph's, Ceredo-Kenova, Tolsia, and Buffalo high schools and the Buffalo Youth Basketball League. He moved to Fort Worth in 1998 to join the love of his life, Stephanie Stephens, and continued his career as a special education teacher and basketball coach at Burleson, Carter- Riverside and South Hills high schools. In 2005 Jamie was promoted to assistant principal at Western Hills High School and in 2009 was named principal where he was an amazing mentor to his students and faculty. He was a member of University Christian Church in Fort Worth. Jamie and Stephanie were married in 2001 and their life together was completed by the birth of their son, Payne, in 2004. He was an amazing husband and father who loved making memories with his family, teaching his son to play sports, laughing with his wife and sharing his heart with them. Jamie loved to play golf; quote lines from movies; travel to his home in West Virginia; vacation on the beach; watch sports; enjoy a home cooked meal; find a good bargain; and spend time with his family. He was a loyal fan of Marshall University, TCU and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Wellman was honored to be principal to the students, faculty, and coaches at Western Hills High School. He took his role as their leader very personal and made it his mission to ensure their environment was positive and productive. He touched the lives of many students and went above and beyond to be more than a principal but a friend and role model. Jamie had an army of friends and cousins who cherished him and he loved them dearly. His childhood friends, Kenny French and Randy Payton, have remained close throughout the years along with his high school coach and mentor, Jody Burgess. He was loved by many and will be severely missed. He leaves an amazing legacy that makes us all proud to have known him and share his life. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edgar and Louise Wellman and Hurshell and Betty Salmons; and special aunt, Geneva Lou Bellomy. Survivors: In addition to his wife and son, Jamie is survived by his parents, Bob and Carole; a self-less brother to his siblings, Alan and Kathy Wellman and Michele Wellman of Kenova, W.Va.; Dr. Jason and MaryAnn Wellman of Brunswick, Ga., and Dr. Amber Wellman-Carlson of St. Simons Island, Ga.; he was a special uncle to Isaiah, Elijah, Jeremy, Joseph, Jameson and Jill Wellman; and was loved like a son by his in-laws, Herb and Kathy Stephens, who he cherished as if they were his parents and shared many wonderful days together.

As a teacher for fwisd and recently retired, I decided to go back and sub now and then. It's difficult at times not knowing familiar faces and different schools. I subbed at WHHS in the fall, and Mr. Wellman came up and greeted me as if I were part of the faculty. We talked and discovered we had lots in common...TCU, UCC, Ft. Worth friends. Such a kind, gracious and true gentleman. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. May God comfort and give his family and loved ones peace and comfort during this painful and difficult time.

Mr. Wellman took good care of us at WHHS. I remember him referring to his students as his kids and I'm sure we all miss our Papa Cougar. May he and his loved ones find peace in the time following his passing.

Mr. Wellman was so many things to so many people. I knew him as an administrator and a friend at Western Hills High School. What made him one of the best administrators I have ever worked for was his love of people. He had a gift for really seeing the best in everyone he met. He also had an incredible sense of humor which you definitely need in education. I was truly blessed to have known him and his father in law Herb Stephens. The world would be a better place if we had more people like James Wellman in it.

Jamie was a kind and friendly student who made my teaching easy at Buffalo High School. I always wished him the best in life, and I think he found it. As it is out of the natural order for a child to pre-decease a parent, so it is that a student should not die before his teacher. I remember his big smile and ready laugh. I taught all his siblings in school, and I know the parents well. I am heartbroken for them all.

Mr Wellman was one of the best principals I have had the honor to deal with in regards to the education of my 3 children who all attended Western Hills. He truly loved all of his students and wanted a safe and secure place for them to learn in. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

My Condolences to the Wellman and Stephens Family! My name is Casey Parkhurst. Mr. James Wellman was my principal when I was at Western Hills High School from 2004-2008. He handed me my diploma on June 07, 2008 and told me how proud he was of me and how special I was to him and to Western Hills. Back in either 2009 or 2010 I remember being in college attending TCC and I remember coming up to WHHS to talk to Coach John Naylor about a good career. Running in to Mr. Wellman and talking to him he said "Casey check with my secrateries and get with me sometime next week to talk." So I did what he told me to do and I meet with him that very next week. I came in to his office and me and him talked and he told me like it was just yesterday, "Casey what do you see your self doing when your older ?" I replied "Honestly Sir I see my self as a broadcaster because I love sports and I want to make a impact on people's lives and get the evil out of the media." Mr. Wellman replied, "I can see you doing what ever you put your mind to and you make a fine damn good broadcaster and I would be your

Terrific pricipal when I was a Senior in 2018-2019, I believe that was his first year with us... He always looked out for us students, pushing back to unreasonable FWISD policies and making it easier to make our school a place for focusing on learning! May he rest in peace...
