Intelligent, eccentric, wistful, bold. Melissa! We wrote copy together at Dillard's; she was my "big sister" then.Oh, how we would dream of our futures while rushing our end-of-the-month clearance copy back to the typesetter! Melissa wrote copy that sounded like a sonnet, then laughed as she crumbled it and threw it away. So endearingly Melissa...

Melissa and I have been friends since we traveled to France when we were in college some 35 years ago. We bonded deeply, sharing our lives with each other over the years. She was so much a part of my life and I am so terribly sad that she is gone. Melissa, I will light a candle and think of you often. Love, Diane

Dear Melissa, I met you at my wedding to your cousin Kyle in Durant, OK in December 1995. I had no friends or family there. Even though we had just met, I felt comfortable with you and you became my honorary maid of honor. I loved your quirky southern gothic view of the world and your intensity about your work. I thought of you often over the years and with great fondness.

Melissa was the sweetest person I know. her heart was too large for her own good at times. If she liked you, she was your champion and defender. Her talents were many. I will forever regret missing our birthday lunch. Michele

Melissa was such a nice person with so many talents and a gentle sense of humor. She always had so many projects going on and so many things she could do. I envied her creativity. Probably 30 years ago she took a photograph of me that ended up probably being my favorite photo of me. I purchased a very special frame for it and gave it to my very special Grandmother. My Grandmother treasured it until she died many years ago. Melissa emailed me this past Christmas because she liked the snow photos (from 2009 Christmas) that I had on our 2010 Christmas card and sent me some of her snow photos from the same timeframe. She signed the emails, "Hugs, Melissa, Daisy and Colette Kitty... " -- Becky Matthews Haynie

Dearest Melissa, I suppose it is true that the good, bright, humorous, and gentle souls do die young. You were there with me and our other friend on my first Thanksgiving after my husband died. You gave me an original art piece that you created. I will remember you fondly!

Deepest condolences to Melissa's many family members on her unexpected and tragic passing.
Melissa had taken the ubiquitous and modest fortune-cookie slips found in boxes and beside plates from throwaways to found art objects and made them a symbol of her creative spirit and her personal hopes for the future. She put them in collages and on greeting cards, which she loved and used frequently.
Whether it was through writing fiction or her photography and painting, her life was a continuing creative assemblage in which she reached out to others in various roles, sometimes as peer, educator, critic, collaborator or mentor, but always as friend. As a fiction writer, she had a feminist sensibility and an unblinking eye when confronting the dark. She persisted in following the creative life as fiercely as her idols, Vincent van Gogh and the French author known simply as Colette.
When Melissa joined me in a research trip to Paris years ago, she wrote ahead so that we could lunch at Colette's favorite restaurant. We sat in the late writer's usual velvet banquette bearing a brass marker with her name.
I hope Melissa is communing with Colette now, under a rainbow of good fortunes.

I am so sorry to learn of Melissa's passing. I knew her when she worked for me as an advertising copywriter at Dillard's in the late 70s. She was writing a science fiction manuscript back then and later won a prestigious award that entailed a trip to London. We were all thrilled for her and basking in her joy (and probably just a wee bit jealous.)
What a sweetheart she was.
