James Hopper Obituary

Hopper James E. Hopper, age 74, passed away on January 21, 2017. Preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Victoria Hopper. He is survived by his wife, Anita; daughter, Julie Hopper (Gerid Ollison); brother, Craig Hopper; and brother-in-law, Sandy (Jan) Klein. Jim graduated from Univ. of Wisconsin with B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. He conducted postdoctoral studies at Univ. of Illinois and Univ. of Washington. Jim was a Professor of Bio. Chemistry for 27 years at Penn. State Univ. College of Medicine prior to moving to Columbus in 2006 to joint faculty appointments at Ohio State Univ. in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. Jim was a dedicated research scientist and professor as well as a world-class gymnast and gymnastics coach. He had many hobbies, including: glass blowing, woodworking, stone work, gardening, snorkeling, photography, cooking, and reading. Most importantly, Jim was an amazing husband and father and a dedicated mentor and teacher to his students. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Sunday, January 29 at the Hopper residence. In lieu of flowers, contributions specified for undergraduate research scholarships may be made to the Department of Molecular Genetics at The Ohio State University in Jim Hopper's memory. Dear Anita and Julie,
It is with great sadness that we learned of Jim's passing. What a huge loss! He was a tremendous teacher and mentor who had a big influence on both of us: we would not be where we are now if it was not for what he taught us on how to be real scientists and ask the right questions. We are eternally grateful to Jim and he will always live in our memory as one of the most remarkable people that we had a chance to meet in our lifetime. May he rest in peace and his memory and legacy live on.

I miss Dr. Jim Hopper. He is a inspiring teacher, an enthusiastic and accomplished scientist and a funny friend to chat with. I took Jim's MolGen 701 (Regulation of Gene Expressions) in the first year of my graduate school, and Jim's inspiring ways of teaching encouraged me a lot and made me interested in transcriptional regulation a lot (and that is exactly what I am working on right now as a postdoc). I also remembered the days in my graduate school when I went to his lab to use the microscope or borrow yeast plasmids, and he is always so generous and so nice to me. Jim is almost always there when I present my research on campus, and he always have the best and most sophisticated questions. He gave me advice to my research problem, and also provided suggestions about postdoc lab applications (one day I ran into him in the hall way of BioSci, and he was very excited and suggested that I should apply to Harry Noller). Jim also came to my graduation and farewell party, and we have a very nice chat. He is a great mentor to me, and will always live in my heart.
