Remembered Fr. Rod at Mass. Served with him during my Diaconate year at St. Elizabeth while studying at the Pontifical College Josephinum. What a wonder model of priesthood he showed me. Truly missed.

August 13, 2012 is upon us, and it has been one year since God called and you left us. The sad and never to be forgotten remembrances of that dark weekend linger on but have eased with yours and God's help, and the knowledge that you are with Jesus, whom you loved and served so well.
Still missing you a lot though, but rejoicing that you are endlessly happy with our loving God, enjoying your rewards for a life well lived in Jesus' name. Remembering you with great love, memories, thoughts and prayers. Thank you! And please pray for all of us as we continue on our own journey to God's kingdom.

Dear Rod....I'll never forget the day I first came to you at St. Elizabeth's, about 15 years ago with a broken spirit. I introduced myself to you, and you said "I know who you are." You took my hand and said "Come and walk with me and tell me about it." Wow! I was overwhelmed! So I walked with you, and you became pastor and shepherd to me and my choir, and my best friend and confidante for 15 years, though it wasn't long enough. Your love, gentleness, kindness, and support, will live with me forever though, along with your unique fun-loving ways. And I'm still walking with you in my journey to the kingdom. Though you left a gaping hole here on earth, your candle still burns, and I hope you remember me in paradise and remember to pray for me in the rest of my journey there. You truly lived your life for Jesus, guiding gently, kindly, simply and lovingly, doing "what would Jesus do" to all those you knew. And you had fun doing it!
Jackie, what a wonderful son you raised in teaching him to be what he was here on earth. Thank you! He got those kind and gentle and loving ways from you. My heart goes out to you and Julie and your family. Please know that I will always remember you in prayer and with love.

Father Rod renewed Mike(my husband)& I's wedding vows @ St. Brendan's on 9-14-2002. I called him from VA and gave him very little notice and he was there for us. It was a very special day! Mike and I were not able to marry in the Catholic Church. We got married by a judge in VA right after 9/11. Mike was on his was to the Pentagon that morning on 9/11 when the plane hit. By the grace of God Mike didn't make it to the very office the plane hit due to a lot of traffic that morning. We got married by a judge that following Friday. Mike couldn't wait to have a marriage ceremony since Mike wanted to make sure we were married in case something ever happened to him. Mike worked for the government and traveled often. We will never forget what Fr. Rod did for us. We knew he was special then and he will always have a big place in our hearts. We love you Fr. Rod!

I had the pleasure of meeting Fr. Rod for the first time at St. Elizabeth in the early 90's when I photographed his parish for their church directory. It was a first when he brought his dog in to be photographed for the church directory. When I learned he moved to St. Brendans my family moved to St. Brendans were over the years he has given first communion to both my girls and just this may confirmation to my oldest. In the early 2000's I was able to photograph St. Brendans church directory and yes Fr. Rod brought his bird in to be photographed for the directory. I have met many many pastors over the years and very few would measure up to the spirituality, sense of humor or character of Fr. Rod. You will be greatly missed.

Although I haven't seen Rod in years, he was often in my thoughts. He was a great friend to me in high school at DeSales where we had many good times. I see that he's done much great work over the years and touched many lives.
My deepest sympathies to his family.

I so appreciated Fr. Rod DiPietro and his caring and sensitivity at our family time of need. When my mother was in ER at St. Ann's, Sister was unable to reach a priest from our parish. She said Fr. Rod had left to return to St. Elizabeth but she would call him. He turned around and returned to St. Ann's to anoint my mother. We have never forgotten and have always appreciated his goodness in doing that. He could have easily made an excuse but he did not. He was the priest we needed at the time. May he be enjoying the glory of the Lord.

I was shocked to hear about Fr. Rod's death. Fr Rod was my mentor at St. Elizabeth Parish while I was a seminarian/deacon at the Josephinum. He was a great guy. He taught me a lot about being a parish priest. I loved his sense of humor. We will all miss him a lot.

Piranha and remote control robots. Not exactly standard issue equipment for a Priest. I lived several states away from my Uncle Rod and did not get to see him very often. However, when my brothers and sister were in Ohio and we knew we were going to the "Cool" house where Fr. Rod lived, it was always an occasion for excitement. I can't testify to my Uncle's impact as a Priest but I can say that having him as an Uncle was awesome. I can't count the times I have bragged about not only having an Uncle who was a Priest but one that had a pet piranha too. If there are lava lamps and skymalls in heaven, my Uncle definitely has the coolest place up there. Thanks for the memories and prayers Uncle Rod.- Your nephew John.

Father Rod had a special gift and he shared it with everyone. He had a way of making you feel special like no one else could. He made you feel like you were important to him and he loved you. What I learned this week was I was no different than anyone else he met. He had God's gift to make everyone feel that way, whether he was marrying you or baptizing your child or just meeting you for the first time in the parking lot. He had more God in his heart than anyone I've ever known. I am blessed to have had Father Rod in my life.

Beautiful DiPietro family,
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful son and brother with us. It takes an incredibly kind and gifted soul to lead and care for a parish as large and as diverse as St.Brendans, yet Father Rod did it with charisma and warmth, and always made all feel accepted and loved. That, in no small way, is attributed to his upbringing and support of those closest to him, and we are forever grateful for his life shared with us. He was called to heaven way too soon for our liking, and far too unexpectedly. We miss him dearly, but are comforted to know that he is enjoying the most fabulous family and friend reunion ever! God willing, we will see him again.
Much love and prayers,

I met Fr. Rod when a good friend of mine was going through RCIA in the Spring of 2008. I am a member of another parish, but I thought Fr. Rod was one of the funniest priests that I had ever met. It was his wonderful personality and love of people that kept the parishioners coming back each weekend. He was wonderful and he will be missed.

May Father Rod rest in peace for eternity in the House of The Lord. As many have said, he was truly one of a kind. He changed the way you looked at the priesthood as he did not fit the traditional stereotype. He has left a lasting impression on my husband and I. He presided over the RCIA class my husband took at St. Brendan and helped welcome him into the Catholic Faith. He gave me the warmest welcome to St. Brendan's parish coming from St. Paul before my marriage. There are many lessons we can all learn from Father Rod that don't come from the pulpit during Mass but how he lived his life. He was a great Father, man and humanitarian which we all have been so lucky to have had him touch our lives. As he enters into Heaven, I know he will continue to watch over his flock (human and animal).

His sudden departure from us is still difficult to comprehend - such a loss for the St. Brendan community. I am forever grateful for his tenure at both the St. Elizabeth and St. Brendan parishes. Fr. Rod was the kind of priest and pastor you wait your whole life to find. He had unusually big shoes to fill when he replaced Fr. Bill Maroon at St. Brendan, but he filled those shoes with ease, grace, tenderness, and uncommon boldness. His joyous manner was infectious and parishioners of all ages were drawn to him on uniquely varying spiritual levels. Rod was an unusual kind of priest, he was like Mary Poppins – practically perfect in every way. Rod was not too pious, yet he was full of an uncommon spirituality. We lived just half a mile from St. Brendan on Dublin Road and Rod and Sr. Pat would routinely drop by our home unexpectedly for dinner or drinks, and those visits are some of our family’s best memories. We loved Rod and we each are better people for having known Rod.

There are already 23 pages of tributes to Father Rod here---what could one possibly say that hasn't already been said about this wonderful man of God? Jesus must have been so happy with Rod's love, joy, compassion, and sharing of all his spiritual gifts with everyone, it's only natural that Jesus would want to reward him by calling him to Himself. I met Father Rod at St Leo's when I first became a lector. I made a practice of telling him the punchline of a joke right before we exited the sacristy for Mass. He would try so hard not to laugh---and anyone who ever watched him try would end up laughing, too! I've never forgotten Father Rod. Someone once penned that "our sorrow over the dead may be a sort of jealousy." I can relate to that because there isn't a doubt that Father Rod IS where I want to be. I am grateful our paths crossed and I hope to see him again.

Sometimes it’s hard to understand why bad things happen to good people. We live in an imperfect world. God cries and is sad when these things happen to His children. I’m sorry to see you go too soon, but am happy that you are now with God enjoying what he has prepared for you. I hope to live my life though Christ as you taught.

I will never forget Father DiPietro. I was put in touch with him after being treated shabbily as a divorced and re-married Catholic presenting my son for Baptism in 1980. Father supplemented the rites of Baptism at St. Elizabeth, and went on to work tirelessly through a difficult annulment process. This man, this man who was a priest, was a rare jewel in our Lord's service. Jane Pease, Grove City, Ohio

I have so much to be thankful for by having Rod in my life as a cousin. We all have a lot of great memories from all of the family weddings and baptisms. You will be greatly missed.

Father Rod presided over our wedding at St. Brendans in 2005. We couldn't have had a better day and he was in my thoughts often because of that. He was a kind man and will be missed by many.

"When the time of our particular sunset comes, our thing, our accomplishment won't really matter a great deal; but the clarity and care with which we have loved others will speak with vitality of the great gift of life we have been for each other." Gregory Norbet

Father Rod was the heart and soul of our parish community. He judged no one, and accepted, encouraged and loved everyone he came in contact with. He was a true servant of God, and lived his faith with a smile on his face, a song on his lips, and a spring in his step. He was truly an example for us all. Father Rod was instrumental in my return to the Catholic faith after many years away. For that, I will be forever grateful. He has left this life too soon, and we will miss him dearly. We at St. Brendan's were certainly blessed to have him in our presence for nearly 10 years. Rest in peace, Father Rod. We love you and we will never forget you.

I am saddened by the too early passing of Fr. Rod, a good priest and gentle man, my Pastor at St. Elizabeth for many years.
