Stephen Garay Obituary

Stephen Garay
June 16 - 1950 - October 2 2015
Idaho
It is with great sadness that I share the news that Randy Garay unexpectedly died last week on October 2, 2015 from a heart attack. Many in our community knew him as the "Gopher Guy".
Randy Garay grew up in the East Bay where he graduated from Miramonte High School in 1968. After High School Randy traveled extensively around the world. At the completion of his travels he joined the Merchant Maritime Service. As a Bos'n in the Maritime Service he spent many years on Tankers and Container ships. His last assignment was as Bos'n on the US Navy's Ready Reserve ships which are moored in Alameda.
During the course of his career Randy Married, made his permanent home in Northern Idaho and raised three children.
It was at retirement that he chose to relive his youth spending many hours perfecting his trapping skills and saving people's landscaping in the process and all while lovingly caring for his mother here in Walnut Creek. He was an extraordinary metal craftsman, storyteller, role model, friend and all-around great person whom would readily volunteer to lend a hand. In the fall months, Randy would always travel back North to his home in Benewah County, Idaho where he would spend the Fall hunting and fishing and enjoying his children and grandchildren. He was there and doing what he most loved, when his passing occurred,
Randy is survived by Florence Garay his mother, Pete Garay his brother, his children and his grandchhildren.
Memorial services were held in Saint Maries Idaho on October 12th 2015.

Hey Randy, I thought about you from time to time over the decades, wondering how you were. Well, now I know, having found your obit. Have a good sleep. I still remember your Morris Minor.

To all of Randy's family . . .

I am so sorry for your great loss of a wonderful human being.

I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Randy's sudden passing . . . and very surprised how deeply he had touched our hearts having known him only as the gopher guy'.

During these many years, Randy displayed wonderful qualities. He was a gentle soul, kind, giving, considerate, and playful and a perfectionist at his trade. He always wanted to show me his catch' or was it to see my distorted grimace meaning NO!

About a year and a half ago when the Master Gopher man came here to do his magic', he told me that he was getting too busy and needed a helper. My grandson, Scott, became his willing apprentice, and Randy took him under his wing and taught him all the tricks of the trade, and then some. They developed a really nice relationship. I regret that my Grandson has lost this special relationship with such a good, decent man. I imagine Randy would have been one of his mentors. The photo is my Grandson's 1st catch here at our home. It was a meticulous job just like Randy's . . . and a quick catch. My Grandson will continue Gophers R Us in Randy's honor.

I admired Randy. He was one of those people who seemed comfortable in his own skin, happy with life . . . and eager to experience more. During one of his visits, he told me about taking up piano. I will always remember Randy's gentle spirit and yet . . . what an adventurer.

Randy always spoke so endearingly about his family and his dear Mom - and secretary!

We will surely miss Randy. I am reminded of something I read years ago: We can never know the full effect that one person has had upon the world. We only know how deeply our own hearts have been touched.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to you all. Cathy Weitzner

Randy helped us out for 10 years or more with Gophers on our property outside of Danville. We got to know him well and enjoyed him as a thoughtful and kind person. We will certainly miss him.

Condolences to all of his family and friends, we lost a wonderful friend and man.
