Pvt. Francisco J. Guardado-Ramirez, 21, was in a heavily armored Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle when it hit the overpass, officials said. He died Wednesday.
Guardado-Ramirez was with the 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga. He was a cannon crew member.
He joined the Army in June 2008 and arrived at Fort Stewart in November that year. It was his first deployment.
Attempts Friday to reach his family were unsuccessful.
Brigade soldiers have conducted humanitarian missions, delivering bags of grain, drinking water and pre-packaged meals.
They are partnered with an Iraqi federal police division. They also run convoys that have been attacked by insurgents in recent months, according to the unit's official Facebook page.

Guardado you have been gone for a long time now. I still remember our times together. Seeing your face for the last time that night was ingrained into me. I will never forget you to this day. I still remember your full name. We shared good times together and bad. I never really got to say goodbye. So, goodbye friend I hope you are doing what you love in a better place.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

To the Family and Friends of Pvt.Francisco J. Guardado-Ramirez,
The losses caused by war are very sad, but the Bible gives a comforting message at Isaiah 2:4-"They will have to beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning shears.
Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore".
We look forward to a time when peace will be upon the earth, and those who have fallen like Franciso Ramirez can be welcomed back.

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Franciso will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .

PVT Ramirez,
No words can wash away what happened that night. We tried. We gave everything we could. I am sure you were watching over us. Your buddies and CMD came a little while after. You have some great friends and leaders.
You obviously touched many and you probably did not even realize it... the way you touched us. I do my job because of soldiers like you. And I am proud to have had the chance to call you comrade.
Heaven was needing a Hero that night.
AtEase, Soldier. Your job here is done.
I will NEVER forget you. Perhaps when I get home from here, we can visit again.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms, PVT. Francisco J. Guardado Ramirez. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Francisco. And to Francisco it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while deployed with the U.S. Army in Iraq. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Francisco, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,341 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Francisco’s family and loved ones.
